Jared Waimon, Goaltending Coach from 2014-19, Sees Success in First Season
EDMONTON, Alberta – Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goaltending coach Jared Waimon has had an exciting first season with an NHL organization as Waimon's Tampa Bay Lightning won the 2020 Stanley Cup Tuesday night with a 2-0 shutout of the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Waimon, a goaltending scout with the Lightning, made the move to the NHL after spending five seasons as the goaltending coach for the Bobcats from 2014-15 through the 2018-19 season.
As a member of the Quinnipiac coaching staff, Waimon helped the Bobcats reach the 2016 NCAA Ice Hockey National Championship game as well as win two Cleary Cups as ECAC Hockey Regular Season Champions and the 2016 Whitelaw Cup as ECAC Hockey Tournament Champions.
Waimon is the first former Quinnipiac coach or player to be a part of a Stanley Cup Champion organization.
Quinnipiac alumni have had a lot of recent success in the NHL playoffs, most notably with Connor Clifton '17 as he and the Boston Bruins came within one game of winning the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals but came up short in Game 7. In that Stanley Cup, Clifton scored the first goal for the Bruins and added an assist for two points.
This season, Devon Toews '17 and the New York Islanders fell to the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals in six games, 4-2.
