Baseball Scores Twice in Eighth Inning to Beat Kennesaw State, 7-5

Bobcats Win Second Straight Behind 15-Hit Barrage Against Owls
KENNESAW, Ga. – The Quinnipiac baseball team picked up its second straight win Wednesday night as the Bobcats scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull ahead for good in a 7-5 win over the Kennesaw State Owls.
Quinnipiac scored four runs in the second inning on a Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) safety squeeze, Danny Melnick (Hamilton, New Jersey) RBI single and two-run single from Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) to jump out to an initial 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats added another run in the third as Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) came around to score but the Owls chipped away at Quinnipiac's three-run lead to tie the game by the fifth inning.
Connor Mahoney (North Salem, New York) came in to pitch in the sixth inning for the Bobcats and settled the Owls' bats before Quinnipiac took the lead for good in the eighth.
With Lutz standing on second base, Kyle Horton (Monroe, Connecticut) drilled a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle to score Lutz before Horton came around to score from second on a Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) single up the middle to make it 7-5, Bobcats.
Mahoney's win was the first of his career while David Longstreeth (Hatfield, Massachusetts) earned his first career save.
Maves and Melnick led all hitters with three hits while Lutz scored two runs and Vulgamore drove in a pair of RBIs to lead the offense.

SECOND INNING
- Kohn singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third as Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) reached on an error by the right fielder.
- Lutz laid down a safety squeeze to score Kohn from third and reached via a single.
- Melnick followed with a single through the right side to score Marrero and put runners on first and second with a 2-0 lead.
- Melnick stole second with one out in the inning and with two outs in the inning, Vulgamore reached on an infield single that scored both Lutz and Melnick to make it 4-0, Bobcats.
- Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Colton Bender (Lebanon, Massachusetts) single up the middle.
- Ostberg came home to score as Kohn grounded into a double play.
- With the score tied 5-5, Lutz singled to lead off the top of the eighth inning and advanced to second on a Melnick sacrifice bunt.
- Horton followed with a one-out pinch hit single up the middle to score Lutz to take the lead for good, and advanced to second on the throw home.
- Maves followed suit with another RBI single up the middle to score Horton and give the Bobcats a 7-5 lead.
- Lutz went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI as he recorded two hits for a second straight game.
- Melnick had his first career three-hit game as he doubled, drove in his first RBI and scored a run.
- Melnick also stole his first career base Wednesday.
- Maves extending his hitting streak to three games as he singled three times for his second three-hit game this season
- He also stole two bases to give him 20 in his career as just a sophomore.
- Vulgamore drove in two RBIs with an infield single against the Owls Wednesday to give him a team-best 13 RBIs
- Kohn went 2 for 5 with a pair of singles for his first singles of the season while he came around to score a run.
- Bender also singled twice for the Bobcats to give him four multi-hit games this season.
- Horton singled, scored and drove in an RBI and came around to score a run for his second straight game.
- Mahoney recorded his first career win against Kennesaw State Wednesday night as he allowed just one hits and two walks with a career-high four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.
- Longstreeth's save was the first of his career as he struck out one batter in 2/3 of an inning
- Quinnipiac baseball travels south to Tallahassee, Florida, for a three-game series at the Florida A&M Rattlers beginning Friday at 5 p.m. at Moore-Kittles Field.
