HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer has received a commitment from forward Sam McCann during the early signing period, as announced by Head Coach Eric Da Costa and the program on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The Stamford, Connecticut-native is currently one of the top scorers in the MLS Academy. McCann has recorded 40 goals since 2016-17 with the New York Soccer Club, including 14 goals in his last 13 games with the U-18/U-19 squad.
"[I chose Quinnipiac because] the environment that the coaching staff has created is second to none, and the academic capabilities at the school are limitless," McCann said. "The program showed me their amazing facilities and the culture that they have created. They really care for and invest in their student-athletes at Quinnipiac. It was the right fit that I have been looking for during the entire process."
McCann represented the United States in 2018 at the Gatorade International 5v5 Futsal Tournament in Madrid, helping lead his team to a tournament title over 22 countries including Argentina, Brazil and Italy. The forward was set to be called up to NYCFC Academy for the spring of 2020, before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We are excited to announce the addition of Sam to our program," Da Costa said. "Attracting the best players from within our state is always a priority for our program. Sam joins a growing list of top-rated Connecticut players that have chosen to represent Quinnipiac University. It was evident from the beginning that Sam and his family shared our core values and were aligned with our vision. We are thrilled to welcome them into our family, and to help Sam navigate the journey toward his goals.
McCann plans to major in business at Quinnipiac. He is currently a zoom tutor during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping kindergarten students learn the alphabet and numbers. He has also tutored elementary school children on local environmental objectives, volunteering at Inspirica, Covenant House and Kids Helping Kids.
"I am looking forward to becoming integrated with my new team, and with the Quinnipiac family values," McCann said. "Competing at a great Division I institution will allow me to continue my dream of becoming a top-class player, while also earning a business degree from a highly-ranked university.
