Bobcats Catcher Builds Off All-MAAC Second Team Season with Impressive Summer
- 2019 ALL-NECBL TEAMS
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Quinnipiac baseball rising junior Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) has been named to the 2019 All-NECBL First Team at catcher, as announced by the New England Collegiate Baseball League on Monday, August 12.
Bender is the first Bobcat to be named to the All-NECBL First Team since the 2014 season when Thomas Jankins and Vincent Guglietti '15 was named to the Second Team. In that season, Jankins was also named the NECBL Robin Roberts Pitcher of the Year and Guglietti was the league's Most Improved Player.
In addition to being the first Bobcat honored since 2014, he was also one of two players from the MAAC to receive All-NECBL honors as Fairfield's Trey McLoughlin was named to the First Team as a Starting Pitcher.
As a member of the Newport Gulls this summer, Bender was 11th in the NECBL among qualifiers with a .339 batting average and tied for fifth in the league with 13 doubles. He finished the season with 37 hits, one home run, 21 runs scored, 16 RBIs and 11 walks. He also struck out just 13 times in 109 at-bats, tied for fewest among players in the NECBL to have 100 at-bats.
The Gulls reached the NECBL Southern Division Championship series where they came up just short in the final game of the three-game series. Newport finished the regular season second in the Southern Division with a 27-17 record, just one game behind the Martha's Vineyard Sharks for the best record in the NECBL.
Last summer, Bender was a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star after batting .327 in 15 games.
Bender had a breakout season in 2019 for the Bobcats as he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team as a designated hitter for the first time in his career. He led the Bobcats in hitting this season with a .322 batting average. Bender was also tied for second on the team with 14 doubles, third with 66 hits as well as 32 RBIs and 26 runs scored.
Behind the plate this season, Bender caught 10 runners stealing in 35 attempts and had a .978 fielding percentage between catcher and left field.
The Bobcats had a record-breaking season as a team in 2019, winning its first MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, as well as winning its first NCAA Tournament game in just their second NCAA Tournament appearance.
