Baseball Earns Key 3-2 Win at Iona in 14 Innings

Ostberg Records Game-Winning RBI Single, Workman Stellar Out of Bullpen in 3-2 Win
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac baseball team overcame a two-run deficit to the Iona Gaels Monday afternoon and came back to earn a 3-2 victory in 14 innings to pick up a crucial win in MAAC Baseball play.
Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) provided the heroics in the top of the 14th inning as he brought home Kevin Huscher (Middleboro, Massachusetts) as part of a two-hit, two-RBI day.
Andrew Workman (Pound Ridge, New York) provided one of the finest pitching performances of the weekend as he pitched 6.2 innings out of the bullpen to keep the Gaels off the board and give the Bobcats a chance to win the game. Workman scattered three hits and two walks in the longest outing of his career. He picked up his third win of the season in the Bobcats victory.
The Quinnipiac bullpen pitch 9.2 innings of scoreless relief of starting pitcher Arthur Correira (Rehoboth, Massachusetts) who allowed just two unearned runs on four hits and two walks in 4.1 innings in the start.

SIXTH INNING
- The Bobcats put one run across the board to cut Iona's lead in half at 2-1
- Huscher walked with one out in the inning and moved up to second on a walk to Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts)
- Ostberg singled to right field to score Huscher for the Bobcats first run of the game
- Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman before he was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt
- Lutz stepped in and lifted the seventh pitch of his at bat to right field to score Vulgamore with the sacrifice fly
- Huscher singled to right center field and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt
- With one out in the inning, Ostberg pulled a single through the right side of the infield that scored Huscher from second base for the game-winning run
- Quinnipiac's 14-inning game is its longest game in at least the past 10 seasons and was just the second extra-inning victory of the season.
- Workman provided one of the best relief appearances on the season as he pitched 6.2 innings, mostly in extra innings, to pick up the victory.
- He lowered his season ERA to 1.25 and now has a WHIP of 0.90 to go with 30 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of relief
- Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey), Workman and Matthew Draper (Lowell, Massachusetts) combined to pitch 9.2 innings out of the bullpen in Monday's victory as they scattered four hits
- Ostberg led the Bobcats with two hits and two RBIs in the winning effort as he now has 58 hits this season
- He has been on fire since April 20, recording 18 hits in nine games for a .462 batting average
- Huscher scored two runs, including the game-winning run, Monday as he singled and walk the two times he reached base
- He now has five runs scored in the past two games and has scored 25 runs this season
- Lutz singled and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as he tallied a hit for the third straight game and tied his career-high with 14 RBIs this season
- Despite not recording a hit, Marrero reached base with a career-high three walks and raised his on base percentage to .377 on the season.
- The Bobcats will be off for five days before returning to action with a doubleheader on Saturday against the Fairfield Stags in a critical MAAC series.
- First pitch in game one on Saturday is set for 12 p.m. from Alumni Baseball Diamond.
