
Mathews Named Volleyball Assistant Coach

Brings USA Volleyball Experience to Hamden
HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac women's volleyball head coach Kyle Robinson has announced the addition of Gary Mathews to the coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Mathews comes to Quinnipiac University after serving in several positions with USA Volleyball from 2005 to 2017. First, as coordinator of the Girls Select age group in the Indoor High Performance Department from 2005 to 2009 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Then, as coordinator of the National Team Center in Anaheim, California for both the Indoor Men's and Women's National and Olympic Teams from 2009 to 2016. Lastly, finishing out his time with the National Governing Body as the coordinator of the Junior Beach Tour in Torrance, California.
"I am very honored and excited to join Quinnipiac University and head coach Kyle Robinson in representing Quinnipiac Volleyball," said Mathews.
Prior to working with USA Volleyball, Mathews was an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa. First as the second assistant from August 1997 to January 1999. Then, the first assistant/recruiting coordinator from January 1999 to March 2005. Mathews joined a program at the bottom of the national RPI rankings and helped build a respectable foundation with having the first winning season in 20 years, two 20-win seasons, and a future conference championship and NCAA Tournament participant.
Before Oklahoma, Mathews was the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Georgia from January 1996 to August 1997 under former head coach and first assistant of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Women's team, Jim Iams.
Mathews got his start in collegiate volleyball as a practice player and summer camp coach with the Illinois State University Women's Team under former head coach Julie Morgan, along with playing on the ISU Men's collegiate club team.
Among his coaching experiences are over 20 years of coaching club volleyball. Most recently with Seal Beach Volleyball Club and Laguna Beach Volleyball club where Mathews has trained numerous Division 1, 2, and 3 athletes along with the current 2 time Division 1 Champion and Player of the Year and a participant with the 2018 Youth Olympics.
Born in Chicago and raised in Schaumburg, Illinois, Mathews earned a B.S. degree in Physical Education from Illinois State University.
