HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team picked up two wins on Sunday as the Bobcats swept a doubleheader with Saint Peter's, 8-0 and 8-0, to close the season on Senior Day.
Despite the two wins, for the second season in a row the Bobcats narrowly missed the MAAC Tournament.
Prior to the doubleheader, the Bobcats celebrated the careers of their six seniors: Lexi Courtney, Keala Cordeiro, Emily Czaja, Miranda Magana, Casey Herzog and Keilani Finley. They were honored before the game and started in both wins for the Bobcats.
Herzog tossed two complete-game shutouts Sunday and stuck out a total of 12 batters in 11 innings en route to her 17th and 18th wins of the season.
In game one, seniors Magana, Czaja and Courtney combined to drive in five of the Bobcats' eight runs.
Game one remained scoreless until Quinnipiac tallied four runs in the bottom of the fourth to break the tie. Courtney led off the inning with a solo home run. Cordeiro followed with a triple to center, and two batters later Brighid Douglas reached on a bunt single that scored Cordeiro to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. Magana then stepped to the plate and drilled an RBI double to left-center to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. Czaja doubled home Magana to increase Quinnipiac's lead to 4-0.
The Bobcats weren't done for the day as they added four more runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Douglas hit into a fielder's choice to score a run and give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. Magana immediately followed with a two-run double, and then Rebecca Drake drilled an RBI single to help the Bobcats secure the 8-0 win.
In game two, the Bobcats scored a run apiece in the second and third innings and added two more in the fourth. With runners on second and third, Drake hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Douglas and give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Herzog drilled an RBI double to left-center to extend the Bobcats' lead to 4-0.
After the Bobcats tallied a run in the fifth, Erin Larsen sealed the game by drilling a three-run homer in the sixth inning to give Quinnipiac another 8-0 win.
Herzog completes her career with 44 wins, which ranks fourth in program history, while her 490 career strikeouts are second all-time. Magana finishes her career with 174 career hits, which ties former standout Jordan Paolucci for eighth all-time in program history.
