STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Quinnipiac Head Coach John Delaney earned the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award, the league office announced this evening at its annual awards banquet on the eve of the MAAC Tournament.
In addition, four members of the Bobcats earned All-MAAC honors. Named to the first team were senior first baseman Ben Gibson, senior pitcher Taylor Luciani and junior outfielder Liam Scafariello, while junior outfielder Brian Moskey was named to the second team.
Delaney earned the Coach of the Year honor after helping the Bobcats far exceed their preseason expectations. After being picked eighth out of 11 teams in the preseason poll, Quinnipiac spent most of the season in first place before finishing one-half game back and earning a bye in the MAAC Tournament with the No. 2 seed. Delaney is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Bobcats, and will be bringing the program to the MAAC Tournament for the second time in that span, after earning the No. 3 seed in his first season at the helm in 2015.
Gibson had a spectacular senior season for Quinnipiac, entering the postseason with a .319 average, 18 home runs and 53 RBI. He ranks seventh nationally in home runs per game at 0.35 (18 in 51 games), and his total of 18 is tied for the Quinnipiac school record. He passed the program's mark of 16 at the Division I level on the final day of the regular season, and is now tied with Tim Belcher, who had 18 in 1997 at the Division II level. His 53 RBI are a new Quinnipiac single-season record at the Division I level.
Luciani made his mark in the Quinnipiac record books with an 8-2 regular season record as the No. 1 pitcher in the Quinnipiac starting rotation. The eight wins is tied for the school's record at the Division I level, while he is one shy of the overall record for all divisions. He went undefeated in MAAC play with a 6-0 record and stands in third place in school history in career wins at the Division I level with 18.
Scafariello ranks second in the MAAC in home runs behind Gibson with 13, and now has 29 in two seasons with the Bobcats, behind only Gibson's total of 31 on the Quinnipiac career Division I list. Three times this season, he has provided the game-winning hits in Quinnipiac's final at-bat in MAAC games: a walk-off RBI single against Monmouth, a go-ahead RBI single in a 5-2 win over Siena, and a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth in a 7-6 comeback win at Marist.
Moskey had a strong all-around season for the Bobcats while playing center field and hitting in the No. 2 spot in the batting order. He hit .312 during the regular season with four homers, 10 doubles, 32 RBI and a team-leading 10 stolen bases. He also provided two of the top defensive plays of the year, diving for an over-the-shoulder catch at Abilene Christian and running up the right-center field hill and reaching over the wall to take a home run away from Niagara.
In addition to the All-MAAC honors, a total of 14 members of the Bobcats were also named to the MAAC All-Academic team:
