HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Melissa Samoskevich has been drafted into the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) by the Connecticut Whale as the second overall pick in the 2018 draft.
"I'm extremely grateful to be drafted to the CT Whale," Samoskevich said. "It's amazing to see the sport of women's hockey grow. I'm so excited to be a part of this prospering time in our sport!"
Samoskevich was selected by her home-state team after the University of Wisconsin's Annie Pankowski, who went first to the Metropolitan Riveters. The senior ranks second in scoring for Quinnipiac with nine points on six goals and three assists. Samoskevich is currently playing in Plymouth, Mich., for USA Hockey's Winter Training Camp.
"We're incredibly proud of Melissa and would like to congratulate her on being selected second overall by the Connecticut Whale," head coach Cass Turner said. "Over the past four years, we've been blessed to be able to watch numerous alums live their dreams and earn the opportunity to play professional hockey. We're confident that with Melissa's elite level skill, determination to get better every day, and love for the game, she will surely to add to that legacy. She's done so many great things in a Bobcat uniform, and it's nice to know she'll continue to have the chance to inspire young female hockey players and fans throughout the her home state.
Four other U.S. Women's National Team members were selected including Pankowski, Megan Keller, Kelly Pannek and Kali Flanagan.
The Connecticut native has proven to be one of the most dominant players in the NCAA, and has recently shown she is ready to compete at the next level after a strong performance with the U.S. Women's National Team at the Four Nations Cup in November. She recorded two goals to help the U.S. Women's National Team defeat Sweden, Finland and Canada to take home the gold.
The senior is also closing in on 100 career points as a Bobcat with 95 points on 47 goals and 48 assists through her four-year career.
This is the fourth draft conducted by the NWHL since its inception in 2015, and this is the first draft that has taken place in the middle of the collegiate season rather than in the summer. The Connecticut Whale is one of the five members of the NWHL along with the Minnesota Whitecaps, Metropolitan Riveters, Boston Pride and Buffalo Beauts. Players are eligible for the draft in their final season of college eligibility and the selection order is chosen based on the current season standings of the NWHL teams.
