Former Quinnipiac Defenseman is Seventh Alum to Crack an NHL Roster
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defenseman Devon Toews '17 has been recalled to the National Hockey League's (NHL) New York Islanders, as announced by the Islanders on Wednesday afternoon.
Toews is the third former Bobcat to reach an NHL roster in the 2018-19 season, joining Matthew Peca '15 who signed with the Montreal Canadiens this summer and Connor Clifton '17 who played nine games with the Boston Bruins earlier this year. Former player and associate head coach Reid Cashman '07 is also in the NHL, serving as an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals.
This past summer, Toews re-signed with the Islanders on a two-year contract following his two-year entry-level contract after he completed his junior season with Quinnipiac.
Toews will become the seventh former Bobcat to dress for an NHL game as he joins Peca, Clifton, Connor Jones '14 (New York Islanders), Bryce Van Brabant '14 (Calgary Flames), Michael Garteig '16 (Vancouver Canucks) and Eric Hartzell '13 (Pittsburgh Penguins).
So far this season with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Toews recorded five goals and 14 assists for 19 points in 24 games. He tied his career-high with three power-play goals and totaled 53 shots on the season.
Toews had 18 goals and 68 assists for 86 points in 130 games over parts of three seasons prior to his call-up to the New York Islanders.
In his Quinnipiac career, Toews played in 108 games over three seasons where he totaled 12 goals and 55 assists for 67 points. In his junior year before signing his entry-level contract with the Islanders, Toews recorded career-highs with seven goals, 23 assists and 30 points as well as being a +27 as he helped lead Quinnipiac to its second National Championship game appearance.
Toews was selected to the All-ECAC Hockey Second Team in 2015-16 after his fantastic junior season and was a three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team selection.
Toews' first chance to suit up for the Islanders will come Thursday night as they are in Las Vegas, Nevada to take on the Vegas Golden Knights at 10 p.m.
The No. 4/5 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team returns to the ice on Saturday, Dec. 29 with a non-conference game against the Colgate Raiders. Puck drop is set for 5 PM at NYCB Live, The Home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
