HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Fairfield, 10-4, in the Bobcats' final game of the 2017 season. Quinnipiac's season comes to an end with an overall record of 18-31 including an 11-13 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Fairfield will advance to the MAAC Tournament with a conference record of 17-7 and an overall record of 30-22.
Fifth-year Bobcat Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) was 2-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season while Mike Palladino (Rockville Center, New York), Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) and Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) all drove in runs for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac starter Robbie Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) was dinged for nine runs – seven of which were earned – over the first two innings as Fairfield jumped out to a commanding 9-0 lead early in the game. Fairfield posted six runs on five hits in the first inning. In the second, a pair of errors to start the inning cost the Bobcats a three-spot after Stags' right fielder Troy Scocca blasted a three-run homer.
In the bottom of the second, Nelson connected for his second home run in as many days with one out in the inning. Fairfield's Kyle Dube didn't allow another hit until Nelson came up to bat with two outs in the fourth and lined a single up the middle.
Quinnipiac pushed two across in the fourth, with Palladino scoring Anthony Cruz on a sacrifice fly and Batten driving home Andre Marrero with a double. Quinnipiac tacked on one more run in their final at-bats. Burns led off with a double before scoring on a two-out pinch-hit single by Saporito.
On the mound, Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, New Jersey) made his program-record 72nd career appearance to retire both hitters he faced before making way for Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Connecticut). Davis held Fairfield to a single, unearned run while scattering four hits over 3 2/3 innings.
For Batten, his career ends with his name atop several categories and may be the best offensive player in Quinnipiac baseball history. For his career, Batten finished with program records in total hits (249), stolen bases (65) while also tying Quinnipiac's Division I record for runs scored (139). In addition, he became the first player in Quinnipiac history to record 50 hits in all four seasons of his career and the 10th player in Quinnipiac's Division I history to drive in 100 runs in a career. Consequently, he is the only player in Quinnipiac history to college 240 hits, 130 runs and 100 runs scored.
Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) finished the season with 16 home runs, tying him with Joe Zangari for the most home runs in a single season in Quinnipiac's Division I history.
