LUBBOCK, Texas - Sixth-seeded Texas Tech was able to defend its home court in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Quinnipiac 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The loss concludes the 2017 season for the Bobcats, who finish with a 14-9 record, and ends the careers of the program's four seniors, Sydney Young (Austin, Texas), Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Fla.), Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Conn.), who participated in four NCAA Tournaments and went 38-0 against MAAC opponents in their careers. The three seniors who play singles, Rencheli, Horton, and Young, were still on their courts when the match was clinched, putting up battles at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
Texas Tech improves to 25-4 overall on the season and moves on to play Denver tomorrow in the regional finals, after Denver upset USC in the other regional semifinal.
"We fought, where we lost it was on the deuce games," said Head Coach Paula Miller. "They dominated on the deuce games, but we played well all around. It's the most games we've ever won in the NCAAs, so we're going in the right direction, and hopefully we'll get some sets and some matches down the road."
Rencheli perhaps put up the most impressive showing at No. 1 singles for the Bobcats, facing All-American Gabriela Talaba, who is ranked No. 9 nationally in singles. Rencheli was down 6-2, 3-2 at the time of the match conclusion, but five of her games went to deuce points, as she fought her highly ranked foe evenly for large sections of the match.
Horton and Young both fell 6-1 in their first sets, but got off to early leads in the second set, with Young breaking for a 2-0 lead and Horton pulling ahead 2-1 on her court. Horton was still within 3-2 in the second set against Alex Valenstein, while Young eventually fell behind 5-2 in the second set against Sabrina Federici.
In doubles, the Bobcats got a strong showing at No. 3 from sophomore Jennifer Lu (Cypress, Calif.) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who were down 4-2 when the Red Raiders clinched their doubles point, but lost two of their games at deuce. Rodriguez got off to a strong start in the first set at No. 5 singles, taking a 2-0 lead, as did sophomore Proyfon Lohaphaisan at No. 6, but both players ended up falling in two sets for the final two points of the match.
Quinnipiac will have a revamped roster next season as if looks to extend its MAAC success, featuring a 38-0 record and four titles since joining hte league in 2014. Lu, Rodriguez and Lohaphaisan will lead the returning nucleus, while five freshmen will come in and look to help pick up the baton from the Class of 2017.
