POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The sixth-seeded Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team overcame a four-goal deficit to tie the score 8-8 with just under 20 minutes to play, but third-seeded Marist was able to pull away for a 17-10 win in the opening round of the 2017 MAAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Quinnipiac, which was making its first postseason appearance since winning the 2011 Northeast Conference title, was led by hat tricks from senior midfielder Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J. - pictured) and freshman midfielder Brianna Fitzgerald (Norwalk, Conn.). Marist moves on to face second-seeded Fairfield in next weekend's MAAC semifinals.
After the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead with 15:15 left in the first half on a goal from junior attack Emily Byrne (Huntington, N.Y.), Marist scored four straight goals to go ahead 5-2 and twice held four-goal leads in the opening stanza before settling for an 8-5 lead at the break.
Quinnipiac, though, got the last goal of the first half as Hlesciak scored on a free position shot with 58 seconds left and then scored the first three goals of the second half to pull even 8-8 on a free position shot from sophomore midfielder Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Md.) with 19:39 left.
Marist answered back 32 seconds later to take the lead for good on a goal from Natalie Bonaroti and extended the lead to 10-8 on a goal from Audrey Carrone at the 17:25 mark. Hlesciak weaved through traffic to close the deficit to 10-9 with 15:17 to play and had several chances to tie over the next four minutes before Marist took advantage of two Quinnipiac yellow cards to score two goals 1:07 apart and take a 12-9 lead with 10:07 left to play.
After Marist extended the run to 3-0, Fitzgerald stopped the bleeding with her third free position goal of the game to get Quinnipiac back within 13-10 with 5:41 left, but Marist scored four times over the last 4:33 to seal it and take the 17-10 win.
Kuhn had two goals and an assist for the Bobcats, while sophomore midfielder Ellie Swenson (Ipswich, Mass.) had a goal. Junior goalie Kyle Larkin (Brightwaters, N.Y.) had 11 saves for the Bobcats, including 5-for-5 on Marist free position shots. Quinnipiac had a big advantage in free positions, converting 6-of-7 (led by the 3-for-3 from Fitzgerald), but Marist had a 25-4 edge in draw controls to help dominate possession.
The Bobcats return most of its 2017 roster next year, as it will look to continue its growth after qualifying for its first MAAC Tournament in Head Coach Tanya Kotowicz's first season at the helm
