Enns Works 7 Innings Allowing One Unearned Run, Offense Posts Season High 13 Runs in the Win
The convincing 12-run win moves the Bobcats to 12-23 on the season and 5-8 in the MAAC while the Peacocks continue to struggle in 2017 moving to 0-21 overall and 0-10 in conference play. The Bobcats also continue their home dominance against MAAC foes, improving to 4-0 in Hamden in league games.
Enns went seven strong innings to pick up his third win of the season, allowing just one unearned run while surrendering seven hits and no walks to go along with six strikeouts. Ever since moving from the bullpen into a starter three appearances ago, Enns has turned himself into a consistent ace amassing a 2-1 record with a sparkling 0.52 ERA in 17.2 innings. He has struck out 17 batters in that span while issuing two walks and hasn't allowed an earned run in 13 consecutive innings.
In a game that saw the Bobcats match a season high with 15 hits, four Bobcats – Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee), Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut), Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) and Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) – each tallied three hits on the day while also driving in at least two runs. Batten inches closer to the all-time hits record at Quinnipiac as he currently sits fourth all-time with 234 hits, just 10 behind the career leader Tim Binkoski '07 (244).
Both Nelson and Liam Scafariello (Southington, Connecticut) homered for their fourth and 13th home runs of the season, respectively. Scafariello's 13 home runs moves him into sole possession of third place on the all-time Division I (since 1999) single-season record list at Quinnipiac. The 13 jacks also stands as the sixth-most all-time in a single-season at Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac took complete control of this home conference game right in their first at-bats as the first six Bobcats all reached base safely while the lead swelled to 5-0 Quinnipiac by the end of the first. Burns drove home the first run of the inning on an RBI knock to left field before Batten followed with a run-scoring infield dribbler to the third baseman. Scafariello came through with a double drubbed to left center that scored two and Saporito followed with a one out sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Enns continued to make quick work of Saint Peter's, allowing just two hits through his first five innings. The junior ran into trouble in the sixth as the Peacocks loaded the bases with no one out trailing 7-0. Even with the potential damage, Enns escaped inducing a lineout before a Bobcat error allowed one runner to cross. Still with one out and three runners on, Enns came through with a strikeout and pop out to limit the Peacocks to just the one unearned run in the frame.
The Bobcats added five runs in the seventh and eighth combined, with two home runs accounting for three of the five runs scored. Nelson took a 1-1 offering with two outs to deep left field that plated Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) from third to make it 10-1. Later to open the eighth, Scafariello took a belt-high fastball way up and over the fence in left that landed at the midfield circle of the neighboring QU Soccer Field.
Andrew Workman (Pound Ridge, New Jersey) entered for Enns to start the eighth and he worked an efficient two innings without allowing a baserunner and striking out one to close out the Quinnipiac victory.
Dealing with rain to start the day, Quinnipiac pushed their doubleheader against the Peacocks to Sunday as the two sides are set to play two games tomorrow beginning at 12 PM.
