Riverdale, N.Y.. - Freshman Ashley Bobinski (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal on a free position shot with nine seconds left as the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team rallied back from a three-goal deficit in the second half to take a 12-11 win over Manhattan on Saturday morning at Gaelic Park.
Sophomore Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Md.) had a career-high tying five goals and sophomore Ellie Swenson (Ipswich, Mass.) added three for her first career hat trick for the Bobcats, who improve to 2-8 on the season and 1-1 in the MAAC with the win. Manhattan falls to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in league play with the loss.
Junior goalie Kyle Larkin (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) had 10 saves, including some big ones in the final minutes as the Bobcats completed their comeback, for her fifth double-digit total of the season. She stopped a Jaspers free position shot at one end, which led to the tying goal, as Kuhn passed to Swenson to make the score 11-11. After Manhattan won the ensuing draw control, Larkin again came up with a big save on a high shot from the Jaspers and Quinnipiac was able to clear. A foul with nine seconds on the clock set up a free position attempt for Bobinski, and she was able to beat Manhattan goalie Nikki Prestiano for the game-winner.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 11 minutes behind a pair of goals from Kuhn and one from Victoria Bobinski (Kinnelon, N.J.), but Manhattan regrouped to take a 6-5 lead at the break. The Jaspers then scored the first two goals of the second half, both by Darby Nolan, to go ahead 8-5 before Kuhn was able to stop the run and cut it to a two-goal deficit on a free position shot with 24:36 to go.
Manhattan got that goal right back less than a minute later to make it 9-6, but the Bobcats closed out on a 6-2 run over the final 20:52. Swenson scored in front on a feed from Amy Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.) at the 20:52 mark, and 1:13 later, senior Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, N.J.) scored the first of her two goals on a cut to the middle to make the score 9-8 with 19:39 to play.
The score was frozen at 9-8 for seven minutes until Emily Engert scored for Manhattan to make it a 10-8 game, but the Bobcats responded on free position shots from Hlesciak and Kuhn to tie the score 10-10 with 9:16 left. Manhattan took the lead back on Molly Fitzpatrick's third goal with 7:09 left, and the Jaspers were unable to get an insurance goal as Larkin stepped up big with a point-blank save and a stop on a free position shot from the dead center of the field to keep the score 11-10.
Kuhn nearly tied the score with her sixth goal of the game after maneuvering around a Manhattan double team, but hit the inside of the post. Just over a minute later, she had a free position attempt from the right side, but instead of shooting, she was able to sneak a pass into the middle to Swenson for the tying goal with 1:13 left on the clock.
Junior defender Kiera Kelly (West Islip, N.Y.) had four ground balls to lead the defense, while Hlesciak caused three turnovers. The Bobcats won on a goal in the final minute of play for the first time since a 16-15 win over Bryant on March 28, 2013, when Maria Blois scored with 10 seconds left.
Quinnipiac is next in action on Wednesday when it travels to Iona for a 3 p.m. contest.
