Nabadduka (1000m), 4x800m Relay and Lee (60m Hurdles) All Advance to the Finals
BOSTON, Massachusetts – The day of preliminary events at the ECAC Championships was a particularly good one for the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team as the Bobcats saw competitors advance to the finals in three different events on Saturday from the Boston University Track Center. Medinah Nabadduka (1000m – program record time), Jessica Lee (60m hurdles) and the 4x800m relay group (Alyson Caron, Darby Ginley, Meghan Curtin and Cori Reid) all advanced to the finals in their respective events to be held on Sunday.
The star of the day for the Bobcats was graduate student Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Connecticut) who busted through with a program record time of 2:52.21 in the 1000m preliminaries, earning the final spot in the eight-runner group of finalists for Sunday. Making her second career appearance in the ECAC Championships, Nabadduka has already improved significantly on her 14th place finish from 2016. Her time bested her own previous personal-best by nearly two full seconds while setting the new QU record by more than 1.5 seconds (previous record high of 2:53.79 set by Tracy Campbell on Feb. 12, 2016). Nabadduka will run the final event of her career in the 1000m finals tomorrow.
Also making noise with an unexpected result was the 4x800m relay group – Caron (Andover, New Jersey), Ginley (Warwick, New York), Curtin (Cohocton, New York) and Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) – who combined to finish the preliminary event in eighth place (final spot to qualify for the finals) with a time of 9:08.37. The four Bobcats finished strong as the time stands as a season-best for Quinnipiac and the program's third-fastest 4x800m relay.
Not to be forgotten, Jessica Lee's (Montgomery, New Jersey) stellar 2016-17 campaign continued on Saturday as the junior standout easily advanced to the 60m hurdle finals. The top-seeded 60m hurdler in the field, Lee breezed through the preliminary with a time of 8.60 seconds (third-fastest out of 32) and followed with the fastest semifinal time (8.52) to roll into the finals on Sunday with tons of momentum. Lee has a chance at becoming the program's first ECAC Indoor Champion (Shameal Samuels won the ECAC 400m during the 2016 outdoor season).
The final Bobcat in action on the day was Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) who impressed in her season finale, throwing a season high 16.96m in the weight throw to take 12th out of 34 competitors. Timpson tied her 12th place finish from the 2016 ECAC Championships while besting her throw in last year's championship (16.54m) by a considerable margin.
Quinnipiac's season concludes tomorrow with three appearances in the finals of the ECAC Championships coming from Nabadduka (1000m), 4x800m relay (Caron, Ginley, Curtin and Reid) and Lee (60m hurdles).
