HAMDEN, Connecticut - Quinnipiac women's soccer head coach Dave Clarke has officially announced the hiring of Matt Jones as a volunteer assistant coach. A highly skilled former player armed with six years of professional experience in Portugal, Jones joins the Bobcat staff with the primarily responsibility of working with the team's goalkeepers.
Arriving in Hamden with elite playing experience, Jones has spent over seven years post-graduation from Sacred Heart playing overseas in Portugal's top divisions. After his graduation from Sacred Heart in 2009, Jones played two seasons for CD Santa Clara in Azores, Portugal before remaining in Portugal, joining União da Madeira for one season (2011-12).
His best seasons of professional goalkeeping came next as a member of CF Os Belenenses in Lisbon, Portugal from 2012-15 where he was a two-time Liga Portugal Goalkeeper of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Towards the later stage of his playing career, Jones signed with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer in the United States where he played through the 2016 season.
In his time as a player, Jones forged his passion for coaching as he first assisted with the Olé Soccer Academy during his collegiate years at Sacred Heart (2005-09). He later joined the staff of Greenwich High School during his senior season in 2008 and helped with the CF Os Belenenses Youth Academy while playing for his professional team from 2013-15.
A decorated student-athlete in the state of Connecticut, Jones played against Quinnipiac several times as he played four seasons for Sacred Heart from 2005-08 back when the Bobcats were members of the Northeast Conference. In his time as a Pioneer, Jones was a three-time NEC All-Conference goalkeeper, two-time All-Mideast Region member and two-time Sacred Heart Athlete of the Year for men's soccer. He wrapped up his career second all-time at Sacred Heart in shutouts (21), third in goals-against average (1.10) and fourth in saves (320).
A native of England, Jones attended Sandon High School in Stoke-on-Trent where he graduated in 2004. Jones went stateside for college, graduating from Sacred Heart in 2009 where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor of arts in business administration with a concentration in marketing, accumulating a 3.70 GPA.
