
QU Women's Ice Hockey Announces Award Winners, Captains At Annual Awards Banquet

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac women's ice hockey head coach Cassie Turner announced the award-winners and recognized the program's seniors for the 2016-17 season at the team's annual banquet at the University Club at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
Senior captain Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) was named the team's Most Valuable Player while Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta) was named the Best Defensive Player. Kenzie Prater (Hudson, Wisconsin) was named the Rookie of the Year while Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) received the Coaches' Award.
In addition to the team's award winners, Alicia Barry (Hanson, Massachusetts) and Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) were named co-captains for the 2017-18 season while T.T. Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) and Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) were named assistant captains.
Quinnipiac completed the 2016-17 at 21-10-6 including at 13-6-3 in ECAC Hockey play. The Bobcats capped off their season with a pair of shutouts at home before traveling to Princeton for the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals, which it lost in three games. For their four-year careers, this year's senior class won 101 games, earned the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in 2014-15 and were also part of the team that won the 2015-16 ECAC Hockey Regular-Season and Tournament Championship while also becoming the first program in Quinnipiac history to host a NCAA Tournament Game on campus.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) was named the team Most Valuable Player after scoring 12 goals and assisting on 11 more for 23 points for the season. Woods also ranked fifth nationally in face-off percentage (.646) and second in total face-offs won (399). Woods also became the fourth player in program history to reach the 100-point mark for her career, doing so with a four-goal game at RPI on Dec. 3. For her career, she finished with 47 goals and 56 assists for 106 career points.
Baumgardt was honored as the team's top defensive after a break-out season saw the senior blue-liner earn All-ECAC Hockey Third Team honors. Baumgardt finished with six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in 37 games while also carrying a team-best +20 rating. Baumgardt anchored a Quinnipiac defense that ranked second in NCAA Division I women's hockey with a 1.32 goals-against average, which also led ECAC Hockey. In addition, Quinnipiac's 18.18 shots-on-goals allowed per game were the lowest in the country.
Prater was recognized as the team's top first-year player after finishing her freshman campaign with six goals and 10 assists for 16 points. Prater ranked tied for eighth among ECAC Hockey freshmen in goals and 10th in assists and points.
Turner emerged as an offensive threat in a break-out season for the Bobcats. The fourth-year forward scored 12 goals and assisted on 10 more for 22 points in 37 games. She finished her career with 29 goals and 23 assists for 52 career points in 149 games.
