Miranda Magana and Keala Cordeiro Hit Five Home Runs in Wins Over Wagner
STATEN ISLAND, New York - The Quinnipiac softball team swept former NEC rival Wagner, 4-0 and 9-5, in a doubleheader at the Wagner softball field on Saturday afternoon.
With the wins, the Bobcats improve to 9-14 on the season, while Wagner falls to 4-15.
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) and Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) led the offensive charge for Quinnipiac, combining for five home runs and eight RBIs on the day
Junior pitcher Casey Herzog (Wappinger Falls, New York) earned the win in game one, tossing a complete-game shutout in the process. Herzog went seven complete innings, giving up only five hits and striking out three.
The Bobcats got on the board first after Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) led off the second with a single, then Cordeiro stepped to the plate and laced a two-run homer to center to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth after Larsen reached base on a fielder's choice, then stole second to get into scoring position. Cordeiro then belted a double to center, to score Larsen and give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
Magana added a loud insurance run in the top of the seventh, as she led the inning off with a solo blast to cement Quinnipiac's 6-0 win.
Magana got the second game off to a fast start as she led the game off with a home run to put Quinnipiac up 1-0 after the first.
The Bobcats tallied three more runs in the second inning, with all of the runs coming with two outs. With two outs in the inning and Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) on second base, Abbey Long (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) stepped to the plate and singled Heimbach home to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. Magana then came to bat and launched her second home run of the game and third of the day to left field to extend the Bobcats' lead to 4-0.
Wagner scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning, but Quinnipiac erupted for four runs in the third. Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) singled to lead off the inning, then Cordeiro uncorked her second home run of the day to left, giving the Bobcats a 6-1 lead.
Larsen continued the rally, immediately hitting a double after Cordeiro, then Heimbach singled to put runners on first and third with no outs in the inning still. With Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) at the plate, Larsen and Heimbach executed the rare double-steal, with Larsen stealing home and Heimbach advancing to third on the throw. Marchuk then hit a sac-fly to score Heimbach to give Quinnipiac an 8-1 lead.
Wagner added two runs in the bottom of the third but the Bobcats answered back with a run of their own in the fourth. After Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) and Drake hit back-to-back one-out singles, Cordeiro flied to center, advancing Courtney. Larsen came back to single and score Courtney to give Quinnipiac a 9-3 lead. The Bobcats only gave up two more runs the rest of the game to preserve the 9-5 victory.
Long got the win, after going four innings, giving up only three earned runs and striking out one.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Thursday, March 28, when Quinnipiac travels to take on Brown in a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
