BACK TO WORK
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team is back in action, as the Bobcats host the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights at the North Haven Racquet Club Wednesday, March 22, at 11:30 a.m.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
Fairleigh Dickinson owns a 3-7 record and having not played a dual match in the North East Conference yet. The Knights have lost their last five contests but have earned wins over NYIT, Hofstra and Colgate.
LAST TIME OUT
The last time Quinnipiac took the court, the Bobcats took home a 4-3 victory over Hofstra at the Point Set Racquet Club in Oceanside, New York. It was a total team effort as five Bobcats recorded victories on the day, with Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) each recording two victories.
Quinnipiac was down 3-2 in the match and had to battle back in the final two singles matches to take the win. Alper came back to tie the match at three after he defeated Coco Haener in three sets in the No. 4 spot. Alper took the first set 6-4 but lost the second 6-4. Alper was able to come back strong in the final set, defeating Haener 6-4.
In what would be the match of the evening, Axel Stern (Tustin, California) took on David Schrott in the No. 5 draw in a winner-takes-all match. Stern bested Schrott in the first set 7-6 (2), needing to win one more set to secure the Bobcats' win. Stern fell behind 5-1 in the second set, but in miraculous fashion, he was able to comeback to beat Schrott, 7-5, to clinch the win for Quinnipiac. It was the second time this season that Stern was able to clinch a victory in the final draw of a match, as he did so against Boston University on Jan. 29.
KEI COUNTER
Ezaka comes into the matchup with 130 career wins which is third all-time on the program's wins list. Ezaka is one win away from tying Eric Ambrosio '15 for second on the program all-time wins list and is seven wins away from tying John Hughes '10 program-record of 137 wins.
MAAC MANIA
In the Bobcats' three MAAC dual matches, they have gone 27-0 in competition. The team has posted a 18-0 record in singles play against MAAC opponents and 9-0 in doubles competition.
ALL GOOD FROM SPOT ONE
The Bobcats have had major success from the No. 1 spot in doubles matches, going 6-3 in those matches.
RACE TO 10
Ezaka, Rozenstein and Stern lead the Bobcats with 10 singles wins each, but Quinnipiac has four players that are four or less singles wins away from 10 on the season. Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) and Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) have eight wins, while Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) has seven wins and Jackson Koke (Calgary, Alberta) has six.
LUCKY NO. 2
No matter if it is a singles or doubles match, Rozenstein is undefeated (3-0) in matches where he is competing in the No. 2 draw.
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
Stern has had the same success, because in matches where he is in the No. 3 draw, he is undefeated (3-0) as well.
WHAT'S ON TAP?
Following the match against Fairleigh Dickinson, the Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday, March 25, when the team hosts Wesleyan College at 6 p.m. at the North Haven Health & Racquet Club.
