HAMDEN, Conn. - No. 10/10 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey topped cross-town rival Yale, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Arena in the program's first-ever game televised on SportsNet New York (SNY). With the win, Quinnipiac moves to 18-7-5 (11-5-2 ECAC) in 2016-17. Yale falls to 10-12-3 (8-9-1 ECAC) with the loss.
Four different players scored in the winning effort for the Bobcats in front of a season-best crowd of 1,110 people. Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) registered one goal and one assist, while Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario), Kate MacKenzie (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta) all added a score. Sophomore forward Kenzie Lancaster (Waxhaw, North Carolina) also chipped in with an assist.
Yale got on the board first, scoring just over midway through the first period to make it 1-0. Eden Murray netted the goal, collected a feed from Kara Drexler at mid-ice and skating down the left side of the ice before blasting it in to give the Bulldogs a one-goal advantage.
Quinnipiac would respond quickly, however, as Samoskevich grabbed an unassisted tally to even things 1-1 with 4:53 left in the first. The sophomore intercepted a pass out in front of Yale's goal, deked a defender and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
The Bobcats then grabbed the lead 1:51 into the second period, as MacKenzie delivered her sixth goal of the year to make it 2-1 Quinnipiac. Samoskevich collected the puck along the boards, carried it out to the middle of the ice and sent a perfect feed to MacKenzie, who went bar-down with a wrist shot to make it 2-1.
Baumgardt then made it 3-1 just over midway through the third period, sniping a slap shot over Yale goalie Tera Hofmann's right shoulder on a feed from Lancaster. Woods recorded the empty-netter with just over six minutes left for her 11th goal of the season.
The Bobcats recorded 55 shots to Yale's 13, and Quinnipiac won 34 of 54 faceoffs. The weekend sweep of Brown and Yale is the program's first home sweep since the first weekend of the year - Sept. 30 vs. Maine and Oct. 1 vs. Maine.
Quinnipiac is back in action next weekend, traveling to St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Feb. 10 and 11.
