
Axel Stern Clinches QU Men's Tennis 4-3 Win Over BU

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Early on Sunday afternoon, the Quinnipiac men's tennis team picked up their first victory of the spring season, 4-3, on the road over the Boston University Terriers.
The victory was the Bobcats first of the spring season as they improve to 4-1 (2-0 MAAC) overall while the Terriers fell to 2-1, snapping their two-match winning streak.
Axel Stern (Tustin, California) won two matches, with Stern's singles win being the match that clinched the Bobcats' victory. Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) also earned his 127th victory of his career, which ties him for third on the program all-time wins list.
In doubles play, Ezaka and Julian Rozenstein fell in the first match of the day,as J.P. Avila and Jay Leevanich defeated the Bobcats duo, 6-3, at No.3 doubles. The Bobcats earned their first match victory at No. 1 doubles as Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Zaretsky battled past Mario Sandoval and Satyajit Simhadri, 6-4. Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) and Stern teamed up at No. 2 doubles, going to a tiebreaker set with Jake De Vries and Marc Sable, with the Bobcats duo pulling away, 6-3.
Zaretsky was the first match done in singles play as he fell to a straight set at No. 2 singles for the Bobcats, 6-3, then retiring in the second set against Sable. At No. 3 singles for the Bobcats, Rozenstein easily won in straight sets against Leevanich, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, Ezaka won the first set against Simhadri before dropping the second set, then coming back to win the final set, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. With the win, Ezaka tied James Kwei '12 for third all-time in program history for career wins with 127.
Stern added one more point in the match to seal the Bobcats victory over De Vries and Boston University in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
Boston University took the final two points in singles from the Bobcats. The Terriers took the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. At No. 5, Alper and Sandoval battled in two sets with Sandoval winning, 6-3, 6-3. Yannone and Avila faced off at No. 6 singles and after each winning a set, Avila pulled away with the 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 win.
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 at 9:45 AM against the St. John's Red Storm at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
