
Kyle Alper Earns No. 6 Singles Win in QU Men's Tennis Loss Against St. John's

FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team aimed to win its second contest in a row when it traveled to take on St. John's, but fell just short of its goal as the Bobcats lost to the tough Red Storm, 6-1, at the National Tennis Center.
Quinnipiac falls to 4-2 (2-0 MAAC) with the loss, while St. John's improves to 2-3 (0-0 Big East).
Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) picked up his first singles victory of the season and his second victory of the season.
The day got started with the No. 2 doubles draw where reigning MAAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, Axel Stern (Tustin, California) and Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) faced off against Roberto Livi and Alan Nunez Aquilera. The Bobcat duo was able to coast to a 6-2 victory, giving the Bobcats the early advantage in doubles play.
However, the Red Storm was able to run off two straight victories, first when Andrei Crapcenco and Luka Sucevic defeated Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) and Alper in a close 7-5 bout. Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) then competed in a close bout against Ognjen Trejgut and Alex Roszkowski, that resulted in a 7-6 (4) St. John's win, giving the Red Storm an early 1-0 lead.
St. John's was able to pull off the victory with five wins in six singles matches. Sucevic took his No. 2 singles match over Zaretsky in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 3 singles match, Rozenstein fell to Aquilera in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. In the No. singles draw, Crapcenco downed Stern in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Ezaka then stepped up in the No. 1 singles match and challenged Livi, but fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) was able to pick up a 6-3 set win after losing the first set to Adolfo Blanco, 6-4. However, Cachapero was unable to pick up the No. 5 singles win as he fell in the final set 10-6.
Alper was able to pick up his first singles win of the season after the junior defeated Federico Ruiz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Bobcats will be back in action when the team travels to Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday, Feb. 4 , to take on the Brown Bears at 4 p.m.
