HAMDEN, Conn. - For the second time this season, the Quinnipiac volleyball team swept the MAAC Player and Rookie of the Week Awards, as junior Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) and freshman Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) were honored this afternoon by the conference office for their performances during the week ending Sept. 11.
Pansari wins the MAAC Rookie of the Week award for the second time this season, after also earning it on Aug. 30 after a 3-1 opening weekend at the La Salle Invitational. Kloos, meanwhile, wins the MAAC Player of the Week honor for the first time in her career, joining senior Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska), who was the MAAC Player of the Week on Aug. 30. Leigh and Kloos are the fifth and sixth players in Quinnipiac's Division I history to win a conference Player of the Week Award (current senior Emma Ogden also won it once in 2013).
The Bobcats earned the MAAC awards sweep this week after an impressive showing at the Providence Invitational, where they finished tied for first with a 2-1 record. Quinnipiac picked up wins over two teams which had lost only one match all season coming in, defeating La Salle (7-1) on Friday and Providence (9-1) on Saturday, snapping the Friars' nine-match win streak. The Bobcats were 3-2 overall in five matches, while also knocking off Fairleigh Dickinson 3-1 at home on Wednesday.
Kloos hit an impressive .383 in five matches on the week, including a career-high 16 kills in 27 attempts in a four-set win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. She then capped off the week by hitting .474 in the Providence win with 10 kills in 19 attempts and only one error. She also came up big in the second set against the Friars to tie the match 1-1, accounting for the final three QU points with a block and two kills, after picking up the kill on match point against La Salle on Friday. Kloos also contributed 17 blocks and a team-best seven service aces on the week.
Pansari had a spectacular week running the Quinnipiac offense, averaging almost 11 assists per set (10.86). She reached the 50-assist mark three times, setting a new career high with 52 against FDU on Wednesday, breaking that with 55 against Holy Cross on Saturday and adding 50 in the big win over Providence. She also had 42 assists in the win over La Salle and now averages over 10 assists per set on the year, easily ranking her first in the MAAC.
Quinnipiac improved its record to 8-5 on the season, reaching the highest win total the program has had since the 2002 team finished 10-15, which tied the 2000 team for the program's highest win total as full Division I members. The Bobcats won 30 matches in their final year in Division II in 1997 and then won 14 in a transition year in 1998.
Quinnipiac will be back in action this week on the road as it begins MAAC play with road matches at Rider on Saturday and Saint Peter's on Sunday.
