QU Softball Clinches MAAC Postseason Berth with Sweep Over Niagara, 5-0 and 3-0

Sydney Robey and Casey Herzog Combined for Two Shutouts, Giving Up Just Five Total Hits
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team clinched a berth in their first ever MAAC Tournament on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over the Niagara Purple Eagles, 5-0 and 3-0.
The Bobcats will continue play in the 2016 season against the number three seed on Wednesday, May 11 in Poughkeepsie, New York. The Marist Red Foxes will host the tournament as the number one overall seed.
The Bobcats had never made the MAAC Tournament in their previous two years as a member, but did earn a trip to the Northeastern Conference Tournament in 2012.
With the results, Quinnipiac finished the regular season at 26-27 overall and 11-9 in MAAC play. The Bobcats went 5-1 over the final three days of the season including two consecutive conference sweeps.
GAME ONE
Starting pitcher Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) helped the Bobcats clinch the sixth seed both in the circle and at the plate in the first game against Niagara. Robey improved to 11-12 on the season, pitching a complete game three-hit shutout. At the plate, Robey went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run.
Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) led QU in hits with a 2-for-2 performance while adding a run scored and two stolen bases.
Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) went 1-for-3 with an RBI-double in the first contest.
The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) led off the inning and reached first after being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Finley connected for an RBI-double to deep center field.
In the second, Quinnipiac went up 2-0 on some small ball action. Johnson led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on her first stolen base of the day. Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) then moved Johnson to third on a perfect sacrifice bunt. Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) stepped to the plate to attempt the squeeze play, but ended up safe at first on a bunt single while Johnson scored the second run.
The Bobcats tacked on two more runs in the third inning. With two outs, Edmands singled to right field and came around to score on Robey's two-run shot down the left field line. The home run marked Robey's first of the season and ninth of her career.
Quinnipiac added one more run in the fourth to make the final 5-0. Ascher led off the frame and reached on a catcher's interference before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) then scored Ascher as she reached on an error by the third baseman.
GAME TWO
Starting pitcher Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) submitted one of her best performances of the season from inside the circle in the second game. Herzog pitched a two-hit shutout while recording a career high 11 strikeouts. With the win, the sophomore improved to 13-13 on the season.
Finley was the lone Bobcat to register a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a run scored while Robey went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
After a scoreless inning to open the game, the Bobcats took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second. With one out, Finley recorded her second double of the afternoon and advanced to third on a ground out. Johnson came to the plate and scored Finley on a single up the middle, her third hit of the afternoon. The senior advanced to second on a pass ball and came around to score on Czaja's RBI-single up the middle.
In the third, QU took a 3-0 lead when Robey came all the way around to score on a triple to deep center field followed by a throwing error by the Niagara fielder.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way as the Bobcats capped off the 2016 regular season with their second consecutive MAAC sweep.
