Robey Pitched 6.1 Scoreless Innings, Recording Eight Strikeouts
POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK – Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) pitched six and a third innings of shutout ball on Wednesday afternoon to lead Quinnipiac softball to a 2-0 victory over Canisius in their first ever MAAC Tournament.
Robey tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in the game while giving up seven hits and one walk.
Sophomore Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls New York) came into the game in the seventh to pick up the two-out save, including a strikeout with two runners on to seal the win.
The Bobcats recorded five hits in the game, all coming from different players. Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) was perfect from the plate in a 1-for-1 performance with two walks on the afternoon.
Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) went 1-for-2 in the batter's box with an RBI-double.
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California), Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) and Rebecca Drake (Manchester, New Jersey) all added hits for Quinnipiac.
In the bottom of the third, Canisius loaded the bases on three singles. With two outs, both coming from Robey strikeouts, Abby Johnson made a highlight play to end the inning. The batter hit a tailing foul ball to right field and Johnson made a beautiful, fully extended diving catch for the third out.
After four scoreless innings, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Drake led off the inning with a single to right field and Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) came in to pinch run. Heimbach followed up with the second consecutive Bobcat hit, a line drive single to center field. After a double play, Robey came to bat with a runner on third and two outs. She scored Vitale on an infield error to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats then tacked on a second run in the sixth. Edmands led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Larsen then stepped up to the plate and smashed an RBI-ground-rule double to deep center field to score Edmands.
The Golden Griffins threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh and possibly extend the game to extra innings, but could not cross a run. The first batter reached on an error and went to second on a single to center by the following Canisius hitter. With runners on first and second, Herzog came in to replace Robey in the circle. The sophomore forced the first batter into a ground out, but both runners advanced into scoring position. Herzog then came through with a three-pitch strikeout to end the game and give Quinnipiac their first MAAC Tournament win in program history.
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, May 11 at 9 a.m. against the No. 2 Manhattan Jaspers. Earlier this season Quinnipiac was swept by Manhattan on the road, 5-3 and 3-2, but out-hit the competition in both games.
