QU Baseball Falls to Rider on Senior Day, 3-1

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team fell to the Rider Broncs on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 at the QU Baseball Field. The Bobcats drop to 17-27 overall and 6-10 in MAAC play while the Broncs improved to 15-27 and 7-9 in the conference.
Prior to the game, the Quinnipiac University Department of Athletics and Recreation held Senior Day as seniors Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut), Justin Thomas (Enfield, Connecticut), Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, New Jersey) and John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the program.
Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) and Joe Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) both went 1-for-3 at the plate for the Bobcats while Oestreicher added an RBI.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) recorded the third Quinnipiac hit in a 1-for-4 performance while also scoring the only Bobcat run.
Starting pitcher Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Massachusetts) was credited with the loss, falling to 4-6 on the year. Jankins gave up eight hits and three earned runs over 7.2 inning pitched while striking out seven Broncs.
Rider jumped out to a fast start, taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The lead-off batter drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball to begin the game. The runner came around to score on an RBI single down the right field line.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Bobcats tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Batten led-off the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on his team-leading 17th stolen base of the season. Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) walked to put runners on first and second, before both players advanced on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Iannotti. With two runners in scoring position, Oestreicher connected on an RBI single to right center field.
The Broncs then turned a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Rider took a 3-1 lead on a two-run home run to right field.
Quinnipiac will wrap-up the three game series against the Broncs with a doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday May 8 starting at 12 p.m. from the QU Baseball Field. The Bobcats were originally scheduled for a doubleheader today, but pushed the second game to tomorrow due to weather conditions.
