Goalkeeper Kyle Larkin Posts Career-High 14 Saves in the Loss
LOUDONVILLE, New York – The Siena women's lacrosse team used a 10-0 spurt to from midway through the first half into the second after Quinnipiac had taken a 2-1 lead and went on to capture at 14-6 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday evening at the Siena Turf Field.
The Saints' victory improves the Saints to 7-5 and 2-1 in the MAAC while Quinnipiac falls to 2-9 on the season and 0-3 in league play with the loss.
Siena's top offense in the MAAC was limited in the early going but exploded throughout the course of play thanks in large part to a six-point night, including five goals, from the Saints' leading scorer Sarah Croutier.
Even with the eight-goal margin, the Bobcats were the dominant team in the early going as Cara O'Meally (Bay Shore, New York) teamed up with Loren Antonacci (Smithtown, New York) for the first two Quinnipiac goals. O'Meally was on the receiving end of a pair of Antonacci passes from behind the net as the Bobcats built up a 2-1 lead approaching the midway point of the first half.
With limited time in the offensive zone, O'Meally's second career multi-goal game proved huge in the early going while Kyle Larkin (Holbrook, New York) was the best player on the field throughout most of the first half. The sophomore goalkeeper tallied 10 of her career-high 14 saves in the first 30 minutes of play while she denied six of the first seven shots-on-goal from Siena's lethal offensive attack.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, as the time of possession continued to swing in favor of the Saints, Siena began to cash in on their significant edge in shots (20-6) throughout the first stanza. Trailing 2-1 midway through the first half, the Saints took full control of the game in the final 15 minutes of the opening period as Siena rolled into halftime on a 7-0 run and opened the second half leading 8-2.
The Siena dominance extended for the first eight minutes of the second half as the Bobcat scoreless streak pushed past 20 minutes of play and the Saints run hit 10-0 before Quinnipiac finally struck with a goal from Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) with 21:09 remaining.
As the game wore on late in the second half, play evened out as both teams scored three goals apiece in the final 20+ minutes but the margin proved well too big to overcome as the final score tipped in favor of the Saints, 14-6.
O'Meally and DeVito each cashed in for two goals while Antonacci tallied two assists as the three Bobcats each finished with a multi-point game. O'Meally is tied with Allison Kuhn (Kingsville, Maryland) for the most goals (five) in the past three games combined. DeVito, meanwhile, extended her point scoring streak to eight consecutive games while she continues to lead the team with 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists).
On the defensive end, Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) continues to churn out solid efforts as she tallied four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kelly has compiled 38 ground balls (2nd MAAC) and 26 caused turnovers (1st MAAC) throughout 11 games in 2016.
Alex Hlesciak (Lumberton, New Jersey) also put together a solid all-around effort in midfield as she picked up five draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls in the loss.
Quinnipiac hits the road again on Saturday, April 9 as the Bobcats head down to annual conference foe Monmouth for a 1 PM start.
