Dani Edmands Went 3-for-7 with Three RBI's on the Day
LONDONVILLE, New York – Senior catcher Dani Edmands' (Northborough, Massachusetts) three hits on the day helped lead the Quinnipiac softball team to a sweep over the Siena Saints on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took down Siena, 6-2 in the first game before defeating the Saints, 3-0 in game two. With the result, QU improved to 2-2 in MAAC play and 16-18 on the year while the Saints dropped to 15-14 and 2-4 in conference action.
GAME ONE
Quinnipiac scored six runs on 10 hits in the first game against the Saints while three Bobcats tallied multi-hit games. Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) led the Bobcat offense with two hits and three RBI's in four at bats against the Siena pitching. Edmands and Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) also went 2-for-4 in the contest, both scoring a run while the catcher added a run batted in.
Robey got the start in the first game and picked up her sixth win of the season. The senior pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Freshman Kendall Brundrett (San Diego, California) came in to close out the game, pitching the final two innings and giving up just one hit while earning the first save of her young career.
After leaving two runners on base in the first inning, the Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) led off the frame with a single to right field and stole second to get into scoring position with no outs. Finley advanced to third on a QU strikeout before Heimbach sent her home with an RBI base hit to left field.
The Saints pushed a run across the plate on a wild pitch to tie the score in the bottom of the second, but the Bobcats quickly answered.
In the third, Quinnipiac tallied five runs off four hits to take a 6-1 advantage. Three straight singles to begin the inning by Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts), Robey and Edmands led to the first run and put two runners in scoring position with no outs. After a Siena infield error and a fielder's choice by Finley, both Robey and Edmands came around to score. With two outs and runners back on second and third, Heimbach recorded a two-RBI single to left field, giving the Bobcats a five-run lead.
Siena got one back in the bottom of the third, but Robey and Brundrett combined to shut down the Saints the rest of the way.
GAME TWO
Quinnipiac scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning of game two, to defeat the Saints 3-0 and complete the MAAC sweep. Five Bobcats each added a hit in the contest while Edmands led the offense with one hit and two RBI's in three at bats.
Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) improved to 9-8 in the circle with her eighth complete game of the season. Herzog recorded her second shutout while holding the Saints to just three hits over seven innings.
After four scoreless innings to begin the game, QU captured three runs in the top of the fifth. Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) registered an infield single to lead off the inning and was pinch run for by Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts). Johnson then laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Czaja to second while reaching first on a defensive miscue by the Saints. Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) also attempted a sacrifice bunt, but was safe at first on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) sent home the game-winning run on an RBI walk. Edmands then stepped to the plate and smashed a two-RBI single to center field to give QU a 3-0 lead.
The Quinnipiac defense held the Saints to just two hits in their last three at bats to secure the victory.
The Bobcats resume play in New York tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 17 when they travel to Poughkeepsie for a MAAC doubleheader against Marist. The first game is slated to start at 12 p.m. from Softball Park.
