Sophomore Takes 6th Place in 5000m With New 22.49 Second Improvement on Previous Personal-Best
BOSTON, Massachusetts – Competing in her final meet of the 2015-16 indoor season, Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) put forth an inspired performance to lead the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team in day one of the ECAC Championships held at Boston University.
Wolff's performance in the 5000m stands as one of the best of the entire season for the Bobcats as she managed to score a sixth place finish out of 25 competitors. Racing against some of the best competition up the East Coast, Wolff timed in at 16:45.65 to earn her sixth place result which stands as a marked improvement from her previous personal best time of 17:07.84. The 22.49-second improvement on her previous career-best moves her from fourth to second all-time at Quinnipiac behind only former All-American Katie Gwyther. Wolff also improved significantly on her 17th place finish (17:21.21) in the 5000m at last year's ECAC Championships.
Another standout on the day was the Bobcats' senior star Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) as she qualified for the 400m finals on Sunday with her seventh place finish in the preliminaries. Competing against 42 other sprinters, Samuels clocked in at 54.61 seconds to join a field of 10 other competitors in the finals. Just one year ago, Samuels placed third in the same event at the 2015 ECAC Championships.
Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) continued her stellar senior campaign as she made some personal history qualifying for the finals for the first time in her career at the ECAC Championships. Competing in the one mile run, Campbell finished ninth out of 27 in the preliminary round with a time of 4:55.84 which stands as the second-fastest in her career.
Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) nearly continued what has been a historic run for the sophomore hurdler as she advanced to the semifinal round of the 60m hurdles before missing out on a spot in the finals by a mere 0.01 seconds. The 2016 New England Champion and MAAC Champion in the 60m hurdles still managed to improve significantly on her 20th place finish at the 2015 ECAC Championships as she placed 10th this year with a time of 8.75 seconds in the semifinal round.
Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) was the lone field performer on the day for the Bobcats as she threw 16.54m in the weight throw to take 12th place out of 27 competitors. Her mark was still historic as she became the first weight thrower in program history at the ECAC Championships.
Rounding out the day for the Bobcats was Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York) and Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) in the 400m as they finished 30th (56.45) and 42nd (58.42), respectively.
Quinnipiac continues competition in day two of the ECAC Championships on Sunday, March 6.
