ALBANY, New York – Nationally-ranked No. 1/1 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey punched its ticket to the 2016 NCAA Frozen Four after clinching the NCAA East Regional title with a 4-1 win against No. 8/8 UMass Lowell at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.
The Bobcats will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four for the second time in program history after having advanced to the national semifinals in 2013. The Bobcats will face Boston College on Thursday, Apr. 7 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida at 5 PM in a game that can be seen live on ESPN.
For the 17th time this season, Quinnipiac came-from-behind to win, improving to 10-3-4 on the year when trailing at any point in the game. In addition, the Bobcats improved to 6-0-3 when trailing after the first period and 26-0-2 when leading after the second. Quinnipiac improves to 31-3-7 and breaks the program record for wins in a season. The Bobcats are now 5-4 all-time in NCAA tournament play.
Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado), Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland), Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) and Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) all scored for the Bobcats, with Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) and Soren Jonzzon (Mountain View, California) picking up assists in the Bobcats' three-goal second period.
Quinnipiac goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) was named the East Regional Most Outstanding Player after a 2-0 showing while allowing just one goal in two games for a 0.50 goals-against average and a .976 save percentage. Anas, Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia), and Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) were named to the All-Touranment East Regional Team. Toews had two assists in the Bobcats' 4-0 win against RIT on Saturday, while Davidson scored in both games. Anas had an assist against RIT and a highlight-reel goal against UMass Lowell.
UMass Lowell used Dylan Zink's 11th goal of the season to jump out to a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game. John Edwardh handed the puck to Chris Forney who fed Zink on the right wing. With a River Hawk skater sliding in front of Garteig, Zink's wrister from the face-off dot beat the Bobcats goalie to give UMass Lowell a one-goal lead.
From there, play shifted in the Bobcats' favor as Quinnipiac out-attempted Lowell, 26-10, through the first period. While Lowell blocked eight of Quinnipiac's shots, 10 were on net that were all turned back by UMass Lowell's Kevin Boyle.
It wasn't until halfway through the second period that the Bobcats broke through, with Landon Smith scoring his 11th marker of the year to tie the game at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Anas received the puck from Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) from below the blue line in UMass Lowell's defensive zone, skated in on Boyle before throwing a head-fake at the River Hawks' goalie and back-handing a shot top-shelf to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
With just under three minutes to play in the period, Davidson gave the Bobcats the insurance goal it needed. The Bobcats' first-year forward scored for the fourth time in his last five games, including three consecutive games with the goal, to give Quinnipiac a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Jonzzon won a battle in the neutral zone and tipped the puck to Davidson who skated deep into the River Hawks' zone before being pushed out wide. From a near-impossible angle, Davidson snuck the puck through a space above Boyle's left shoulder for his ninth goal of the season.
Right out of a television timeout in the third period, St. Denis stole the puck in the offensive zone as he batted the puck out of mid-air. He collected the puck and fired it past a diving Kevin Boyle for his second goal of the tournament.
Quinnipiac will face Boston College in the Frozen Four at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida on Apr. 7 at 5 PM.
