Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team begins the final week of the regular season when it travels to Marist on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest that will be shown on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC Game of the Week package.
Quinnipiac will close out the year on the road, facing Marist on Friday and then traveling to Albany to meet Siena on Sunday in hte regular season finale. The Bobcats will then return to Albany next week to participate in the MAAC Tournament, beginning on Thursday, March 3.
The first meeting with Marist on Feb. 4 was arguably the best game that the Bobcats played all season. Quinnipiac roared out to a 22-point lead at the half (47-25), which was its largest lead of the season at the time, and built the lead up to as many as 36 points in the second half before settling for a 79-53 victory.Freshman guard Andrew Robinson (Takoma Park, Md. - pictured) had a memorable effort in that first game against Marist, knocking down five first-half three-pointers to lead the Bobcats with 15 points. Robinson was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Feb. 9 after his performance.
Last year's meeting in Poughkeepsie was much closer, with the Bobcats escaping with a 72-71 victory. Marist, though, would go on to defeat Quinnipiac in the opening round of the MAAC Tournament 80-74 by shooting 13-19 from three-point territory. Khallid Hart shot 7-7 from the floor in that game (3-3 from three-point territory) to lead the Red Foxes.
Quinnipiac had a pair of dramatic home games last week, defeating Saint Peter's 56-55 on Thursday when the Peacocks had a potential game-winning shot waved off after an officials review. Sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) had the game-winning block, which landed out of bounds with 0.4 seconds left, and the quick shot taken by Quadir Welton of Saint Peter's was just after the buzzer.
On Sunday, Quinnipiac rallied from 13 down in the second half to cut the lead to one point (with the ball) in the final minute, but had a three-pointer rim out before falling 63-59. Senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) had 13 of his 15 points in the second half to lead the comeback, tying with Daniels for team-high honors.
