Bobcats Open 2016 Season on Wed, Feb. 17 at UConn
HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse program has named senior midfielder Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) as the 2016 team captain, as announced by interim head coach Brittany Fortunato (formerly Hauser).
Carey takes her first career leadership role with the Bobcats as she steps in for Vicki Kuhn '15 who stood with the role of team captain since April 2014. The Bobcats graduated five senior class members from their 2015 squad and return 21 letter winners from last season. Carey's leadership, along with the leadership of 14 other upperclassmen, will be needed on a team that will feature 10 freshmen this upcoming season.
"Aileen has really stepped up this year as a leader, not only has she done a great job leading by example but she has also become a great vocal leader," Coach Fortunato said. "Aileen is one of the hardest workers on and off the field and a great role model for her teammates."
Carey has played in 42 career games, having started 38 of those games for the Bobcats. Over her three-year career, Carey has registered 35 goals and 14 assists for 49 total points, averaging more than a point per game over her 42 appearances for the Bobcats. She has also chipped in 45 ground balls, 37 draw controls and 19 caused turnovers at the midfield position. The 2015 campaign was a very successful one for Carey as she tallied new single-season career-highs in goals (16), assists (seven), points (23), shots (39) and shots-on-goal (28) in 13 games before missing the final three games of the season due to injury. Her 23 points led all Quinnipiac midfielders in 2015 while she will be the second-leading returning scorer for the Bobcats in 2016. Carey is a two-time MAAC All-Academic Team honoree.
The 2016 season is fast approaching for the Bobcats as Quinnipiac's season opener falls on Wednesday, February 17 at in-state foe UConn at 3:00 PM.
