Samoskevich Scores Late to Power No. 8/8 QU Women's Ice Hockey Past Penn State, 2-1

Hamden, Conn. - No. 8/8 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey kicked off the second half of the 2016-17 season in dramatic fashion on Friday evening at High Point Solutions Arena, scoring with 1:08 left in regulation to skate past Penn State, 2-1.
Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) netted the game-winner for Quinnipiac, firing a wrist shot into the back of the net with just over a minute left. Alicia Barry (Hanson, Massachusetts) and Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) were both credited with assists on the play.
With the win, the Bobcats move to 14-4-3 (7-2-1 ECAC) on the season, while Penn State falls to 5-11-3 (4-3-1 CHA). Quinnipiac stretches its undefeated streak to nine games, having won its last four contests.
Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) scored the Bobcats' first goal of the night, tipping a loose puck into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the year to make it 1-0 with 8:41 left in the first period. Raquel Pennoyer (Rehoboth, Massachusetts) fired a series of shots at goal from the left side, then Turner cleaned things up to grab the team's first goal of the second half of the season.
Turner now has 15 points on the season, while Pennoyer has four.
Penn State tied things up with just 15 seconds left in the first period, as Victoria Samuelsson tapped the puck by Bobcats' goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) to make it 1-1.
Rossman went on to record 18 saves in the contest, earning her 12th win of the season in net for Quinnipiac. She now has a .921 save percentage on the year to go along with a 1.45 goals-against average. Penn State goaltender Daniela Paniccia made 47 saves in the contest.
Samoskevich then registered her second game-winner of the season late in the third period. She now has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points, which ranks third on the team.
Quinnipiac recorded 49 shots on net, while the Nittany Lions had only 19. The Bobcats had 20 shots in the final 20 minutes of action., and won 34 of 55 faceoffs for the night.
