YESTERDAY'S RESULT
Quinnipiac is coming off its best performance of the young season, battling No. 11 Gonzaga evenly for most of the first half before falling 82-62. The Bobcats were within just one point with five minutes to go in the first half at 26-25 before an 11-0 run helped Gonzaga out to a 37-29 lead at the break. Quinnipiac opened the second half with a three-pointer from Peter Kiss to cut it to 37-32 but could come no closer.
BREAKTHROUGH NIGHT FOR KISS
Freshman guard Peter Kiss led Quinnipiac with 18 points in yesterday's loss to Gonzaga, shooting an impressive 8-13 from the floor against the nationally ranked Bulldogs. It was the third straight game that a different new Bobcat led the team in scoring. Reggie Oliver (a JuCo transfer) led with 15 on opening day, while freshman Mikey Dixon led with 17 against Columbia.
STACKING UP IN THE MAAC
Over the last seven years from 2009-2016, Quinnipiac ranked tied for second among the 11 MAAC schools in total wins, tallying 122 in that span. Iona, which has won at least 20 games in each of the last seven years, led with 161, followed by Quinnipiac and Fairfield tied for second at 122.
A RARE OFF-NIGHT ON THE BOARDS
Gonzaga outrebounded Quinnipiac by 17 (48-31), the largest rebounding deficit that the Bobcats have suffered under Head Coach Tom Moore. For each of the last six years, the Bobcats have led the nation in at least one rebounding category. In Moore's nine-plus seasons, Quinnipiac has been +10 or better on the boards 107 times and -10 or worse only five times (including twice this season).
FLORIDA HOME
Quinnipiac has three players with Florida ties. Daniel Harris (Tampa) is a native Floridian, who never saw snow before last year at Quinnipiac. Reggie Oliver currently lives in Apopka after attending high school in Oregon and junior college in Texas. Alain Chigha is a native of Cameroon who played high school basketball at The Rock School in Gainesville.
HARRIS CONTINUES THREE-FOR-ALL
Senior guard Daniel Harris ranked third in the MAAC in three-point percentage (40.7) last season. Harris was 5-5 from three in a game against Manhattan, tying for the second-best single-game performance in Quinnipiac's Division I history. He has started out this season shooting 7-16, and has now made two or more threes in 26 of 33 career games as a Bobcat, including all three this year.
SCORING BALANCE
Quinnipiac almost has five players averaging in double figures through the first three games. Mikey Dixon (9.7) is one point shy of averaging 10.0, while Reggie Oliver (12.0 ppg), Chaise Daniels (11.3 ppg), Peter Kiss (10.7 ppg) and Daniel Harris (10.3 ppg) are all separated by less than two points.
DON'T I KNOW YOU
Quinnipiac and Seton Hall haven't met since 1998-99 (Quinnipiac's first year in Division I), but the coaching staffs know each other well. All three Quinnipiac assistant coaches (Sean Doherty, Eric Eaton and Tony Newsom) were assistants at Holy Cross under Ralph Willard, Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard's father. Kevin was working with the Boston Celtics at the time under Rick Pitino.
NEXT UP
Quinnipiac will face either Stanford or Indiana State on Sunday on the final day of the AdvoCare Invitational. A loss to Seton Hall would give the Bobcats an 11 a.m. matchup with Indiana State, while an upset win would pair Quinnipiac with Stanford at 7 p.m.
