Orlando, Fla. – The Quinnipiac men's basketball team went on a 13-0 run in the second half to cut a 15-point Seton Hall lead to two with just under 10 minutes left, but the Pirates regrouped and captured a 90-79 win over the Bobcats on Friday evening on the second day of the AdvoCare Invitational at the HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 0-4, but have had two straight solid performances against top quality opponents, after falling 82-62 to No. 11 Gonzaga yesterday. Seton Hall moves to 4-1 with the win, with the only loss a close battle with Florida in yesterday's opening round.
Seton Hall led by seven at the half (46-39) and gradually pushed its lead up to 15 points at 62-47 on two Michael Nzei foul shots with 12:45 to go. Quinnipiac, though, responded with its best stretch of basketball of the season, using a 13-0 run to pull within 62-60 on a three-pointer from freshman guard Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) with 9:50 to go.
A four-point play for Seton Hall on a lay-up coupled with an intentional foul, helped the Pirates go back up by seven at 68-61. A Kiss jumper with 5:35 to go made it 71-65, but Seton Hall's Myles Powell was fouled in the act of shooting a three and made all of them to push the lead back to double figures at 76-65.
Quinnipiac came out firing, as senior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) hit a couple of early three-pointers to stake the Bobcats to an 11-3 lead. Junior guard Reggie Oliver (Apopka, Fla.) hit a long three-pointer and Harris followed with a fast break layup to give the Bobcats a 20-10 lead just 5:48 into the contest.
Seton Hall withstood the early punch, though, and went on a 10-0 run to tie the score up on a basket from Desi Rodriguez. The Pirates went ahead 26-22 before Kiss tied it at 26-26 with a three-pointer. Quinnipiac tied it back up on a layup from sophomore forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) at 28-28, but Myles Powell hit a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run for the Pirates. Seton Hall led by as many as nine, but the Bobcats closed out the half with a layup from junior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) to make the score 46-39 at the break.
Kiss finished with 19 points, setting a new career high for the second day in a row after having 18 yesterday against Gonzaga. Harris added 18 points for the Bobcats, while Daniels had 14 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. Desi Rodriguez led Seton Hall with 23 points and 11 rebounds, pacing five Pirates in double figures, while Nzei (19 points, 12 rebounds) also had a double-double.
Quinnipiac will close out play on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Indiana State on the final day of the AdvoCare Invitational. The Sycamores lost two down-to-the-wire contests to Iowa State and Stanford in their first two contests of the weekend.
