
QU Men's Tennis Drops Season Opener at St. John's, 4-0

HARRISON, New York – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team was swept by the St. John's Red Storm, 4-0, Sunday evening in the Bobcats 2016 season opener. The Red Storm took the match, 4-0, with the teams playing with the clinching-style match format.
Quinnipiac's loss to St. John's was its first of the season as the Bobcats fall to 4-1 (2-0 MAAC) while the Red Storm improve to 4-1.
Opening in doubles play, Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) took on the nationally-ranked No. 49 doubles team of Lucas Hejhal and Vaidik Munshaw, falling 6-2 in the match. Dusan Vukicevic and MJ Every teamed up at No. 3 doubles for St. John's taking on Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) with the Bobcats duo falling, 6-3. Due to the clinching format, the match between Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) and Daniel Skripnik and Roberto Livi went unfinished, with the Bobcats leading, 5-4.
St. John's continued its strong play, taking three matches to clinch the match victory. At No. 6 doubles, Alper took on Vukicevic but fell in the first completed match, 6-1, 6-0. Andrei Crapcenco competed at No. 5 singles for St. John's in his first match against van Biezen, but van Biezen fell, 6-3, 6-1. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) fell in the clinching match for the Bobcats to Munshaw, 6-1, 6-4.
Three matches went unfinished, most notably Zaretsky's match against nationally-ranked No. 56 Hejhal where Zaretsky was leading 6-3, 2-5 when the match went unfinished at No. 2 singles. Ezaka nearly took the first set against Skripnik but fell in the tiebreaker first set, 6-7 (5). Kuwert was trailing against St. John's Livi, 2-6, 2-5, when Rozenstein fell in the match clincher in the loss for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 when it travels to Providence, Rhode Island to face the Brown Bears at the Indoor Courts of the Paul Bailey Pizzitola Memorial Sports Center beginning at 4 P.M.
