HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Rachel D'Avino Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was presented to Michelle R. Isabella at last Saturday's MAAC opener against Rider.
Following the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Quinnipiac soccer coaches Dave Clarke (women's) and Eric da Costa (men's) organized an online auction of soccer jerseys from around the world bearing the number 26 or the name "Sandy Hook". Proceeds from the online auction totaled $26,000 and were donated to Quinnipiac to establish this fund in memory of Rachel D'Avino, one of the educators lost on December 14, 2012.
"I cannot express how much it means to me to know that the scholarship was awarded to such a kind, driven and bright individual," said Lauren Carmody Grenier, cousin to Rachel D'Avino and 2003 graduate of Quinnipiac University. "Within minutes of meeting Michelle, I knew she was the perfect candidate to receive the scholarship. Her warm, outgoing personality and commitment to her field was something that was easily recognizable. It was the same passion we all saw in Rachel. My heartfelt congratulations goes out to Michelle for this wonderful achievement."
Isabella is a member of Quinnipiac's Class of 2016. Isabella is a graduate of Newtown High School in 2012 and a resident of Sandy Hook, Connecticut. She is studying Elementary Education with plans to enter the MAT program upon receiving her undergraduate degree in the Spring of 2016.
Carmody '03 was on-hand for Saturday's game to award the scholarship to Isabella prior to the start of play.
