A Little Recognition
For the first time in nearly a calendar year, the Quinnipiac baseball team received votes in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll, released on April 13, 2015. Ranked 5th in the poll was today's opponent, the Northeastern Huskies. It's the first time since April 21, 2014 the Bobcats received votes and was just the third time in three seasons they received votes in the poll.
Offensive Explosion
The Bobcats bats have come alive since starting conference play as the team is batting .308 in 12 games against MAAC opponents, averaging five runs and just under 10 hits per game. Last weekend against Manhattan, the Bobcats batted .350 with 22 runs on 35 hits. The team also got on pace at a furious pace, with a team on-base percentage of .421.
Gettin' Gibby With It
Freshman third baseman Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) clubbed his first home run of the season over the weekend for the Bobcats with a drive to left field. Gibson was second on the team with a .500 batting average against the Jaspers, going 5 for 10. Gibson started off the series on a high note with a 3 for 5 performance with a double, home run and two RBIs. He is currently riding an eight game hitting streak and has scored a run in five straight games.
Gibson wasn't the only freshman standout last week for the Bobcats as Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) had the best week of his career. Over a span of six games, Saporito went 7 for 17 with two doubles, a triple and eight RBIs. Saporito had just two RBIs heading into the week, before belting three multi-RBI doubles in three straight game days.
The Kid is On Fire
Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) tore it up over the past week as he batted .667 in the series against Manhattan with multiple hits in every game. Guglietti went 5 for 8 in the doubleheader on Saturday followed by a 3 for 4 showing on Sunday afternoon. Guglietti hit two doubles and a triple to lead the team in extra-base hits while also leading the team in hits (8), RBI (5), on-base percentage (.692) and slugging percentage (1.000)
Approaching Records
Guglietti is also approaching some offensive team records. Guglietti needs just one hit to become the eighth Quinnipiac baseball player in program history to record 200 hits and is just two hits away from tying current head coach John Delaney for fifth all-time with 201 career hits. Adding to the accomplishments, Guglietti is five doubles away from the all-time doubles record of 47 set by Tim Binkoski '07.
Mike'd Up
Centerfielder Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) has reached base in 19 straight games, coming home to score a run in five consecutive games and eight of the last nine. The Bobcats' centerfielder went 4 for 13 against the Jaspers with four runs and a pair of stolen bases to take the team lead with 13.
First Career Win
Luciani recorded the first win of his collegiate career Saturday afternoon as he came on to relieve starting pitcher Wyatt Hamilton (Falmouth, Massachusetts). The freshman pitched four innings of relief scattering just three hits with one strikeout for his third scoreless outing of the season. Luciani has been solid in long relief for the Bobcats all season, as he has posted a 3.95 ERA in 27.1 total innings pitched
The Bobcats have been a solid team this season at the plate with runners on base, batting .312 as a team compared to just .254 by opponents. Donaghue leads the Bobcats with an impressive .449 batting average, going 22 for 49 with runners on base. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) is second on the team with a .396 batting average as he and Louis Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) are second on the team with 21 hits.
Bring 'Em Home
With runners in scoring position, the Bobcats have been nearly just as impressive by batting .291 as a team. The Bobcats are 87 for 299 as a team, led by Donaghue's .531 batting average, as he is 17 for 32. Donaghue has six more hits with runners in scoring position than any other Bobcat. Batten is 11 for 29, good for a .379 batting average while Guglietti is 11 for 37 at .297.
On Deck
The Bobcats will continue its 10 game homestand this weekend when they host the Fairfield Stags in an intrastate, MAAC weekend series with a doubleheader scheduled to begin Saturday at 12 P.M. followed by a single game on Sunday with first pitch set for 12 P.M.
