HAMDEN, Conn. – Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) tied his career-high for home runs in a season with a two-run home run for his fifth of the year in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Quinnipiac baseball team defeated the Northeastern Huskies 5-1 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.
The Bobcats picked up their first ever victory in the first meeting between the two teams. Quinnipiac has now won two straight games and 10 of its last 12 games to improve to 15-17 (8-4 MAAC) on the season. Northeastern falls to 14-21 with the loss to snap its three-game winning streak.
Guglietti also moved into a three-way tie Steve Kulpa '93 and head coach John Delaney '08 for fifth place in program history with his 201st career hit. Guglietti went 1 for 4 with the two-run home run to extend his hitting streak to five games.
Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) also went deep for the Bobcats with a line drive home run as he went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored and a walk. Iannotti's home run was his first of the season and third of his career.
Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York), Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) and John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) each recorded one hit in the game for the Bobcats.
Starting pitcher Charlie Murray (Charlton, Massachusetts) picked up his first career victory for the Bobcats after pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings where he allowed just one hit and struck out four batters. Reliever Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, New Jersey) came in for Murray (1-1) and pitching 2 2/3 of relief with a season-high four strikeouts for the Bobcats in his longest relief outing of the season. In total, three Bobcat pitchers combined to allow just one run on three hits to the Huskies
Both teams were scoreless through the first three and a half innings thanks to good pitching early on. Murray led the charge as he struck out the side in the top of the third inning to give the Bobcats some momentum.
The Bobcats put four runs across the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Palladino led off the inning with his team-leading 11th double of the season and was quickly sacrificed to third base by Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, New Jersey). Batten followed with a sharp single to centerfield to make it 1-0. Guglietti stepped into the box and hit towering drive deep over the right field fence to quick Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
After Iannotti walked, Nate Borges replaced starting pitch Brian Christian (0-3) on the hill. Bodenhamer slapped a ground ball down the third base line that hit the bag and put runners on first and second. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) reached on a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners and allowed the Bobcats to pull off a successful double steal. Oestreicher took off for second base and as soon as the catcher released the ball, Iannotti darted for home plate where slid safely past Josh Treff for the fourth run of the inning.
Northeastern received two one-out walks from Murray before yielding the ball to Lorenzetti in the top of the sixth inning. After Lorenzetti struck out Treff he got Rob Fonseco to pop up to Donaghue at second to end the inning.
In the bottom half of sixth inning, Iannotti lined a home run just over the right field fence to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead with one out in the inning to give them a comfortable lead.
The Huskies broke the Bobcats shutout big in the top of the ninth inning. Leading off the ninth, Fonseca lifted a deep fly ball to centerfield but Palladino got a great job and made a diving catch towards the right centerfield wall. Two batters later, Cam Hanley drove a solo home run off Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) to put the Huskies on the board, but it's all the offense the Huskies could muster.
The Bobcats will continue their 10 game homestand on Saturday, April 18 when they host the Fairfield Stags for a doubleheader beginning at 12 P.M. at the QU Baseball Field.
