
Willem van Biezen Wins Final Match to Clinch QU Men's Tennis' 4-3 Victory vs. Stony Brook

HAMDEN, Conn. – Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) played a crucial role for the Quinnipiac men's tennis team as he won the final match of the afternoon to clinch the Bobcats' first ever victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
"That was a hard fought victory over a very good Stony Brook team today," head coach Chris Pappas said. "Our boys played hard and worked their butts off to earn that win."
The Bobcats had never beat the Seawolves prior to today's match dating back to at least the 2001-02 season as they improve to 10-7 (4-0 MAAC) while the Seawolves drop to 5-7 (1-1 MVC).
Quinnipiac and Stony Brook were tied 3-3 with the No. 6 singles match yet to finish between van Biezen and Albert Fontova. After van Biezen took the first set 6-1 but Fontova came back to tie the match, winning the second set 7-5. van Biezen came through for the Bobcats as he won the crucial point to give the Bobcats the match with his third set victory to win the match 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, New York) took sole possession of second all-time in program history with his 128th and 129th victories of the season for the Bobcats as he and van Biezen were the only Bobcats to win multiple matches. Ambrosio has now won eight consecutive matches dating back to his last loss on March 29. With his two victories, van Biezen has now won 27 matches this season.
Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) clinched the first point of the match for the Bobcats with their sixth straight doubles victory together as they knocked off Raphael Termat and Kenzo Kauffman at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Ambrosio and van Biezen took the first doubles match of the afternoon by defeating Tyler Hoffman and Vinicius Degani, 8-4. Stony Brook took the second match to tie it with Alexandre Felisa and Jose Morales defeating Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey), 8-5, before Ezaka and Haraguchi clinched the point for the Bobcats.
Both teams were neck and neck in singles play as they each one three matches. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) won his 31st match of the season Tuesday afternoon as he took the court in singles play to defeat Hoffman at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Ambrosio settled down in the second set to defeat Morales in No. 3 singles, 7-6 (2), 6-3. van Biezen was the hero of the day as he won the match for the Bobcats in his three set win at No. 6 singles over Fontova.
Ezaka lost a close three set match at No. 1 singles as he came back in the second set to force a third but fell to Termat, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Kuwert lost another close match for the Bobcats at No. 2 singles as the first set went to a tiebreaker bought Felisa ended up taking the match, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Roser fell at No. 5 singles for the Bobcats against Kauffman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

The Bobcats will have a few days off before the begin their three match road trip to end the regular season as they travel to Saint Peter's Friday for a MAAC matchup at 3 P.M. in Jersey City, New Jersey before traveling to West Long Branch, New Jersey to face the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday at 2 P.M.
