Wappingers Falls, New York – The Quinnipiac baseball team swept a doubleheader against the Manhattan Jaspers as Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) pounded out three extra-base hits in the doubleheader in the Bobcats 11-9 and 6-0 victories Saturday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Bobcats took over first place in the MAAC with an 8-3 record in conference play as they recorded their season best fifth consecutive victory. Overall, the Bobcats are 13-16 while the Manhattan Jaspers drop to 8-21 (4-7 MAAC).
Guglietti went 5 for 8 with two doubles and triple along with four RBI in the doubleheader to lead the Bobcats. In game one of the doubleheader, Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) went 4 for 6 with three runs scored to lead the Bobcats. Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double as six different Bobcats recorded multiple hits.
Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Massachusetts) and Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Connecticut) each picked up wins for the Bobcats as Jankins improved to 4-3 and Luciani picked up his first career victory for the Bobcats.
Game One
Six different Bobcats record multiple hits for the Bobcats as Batten went 4 for 6 and Gibson went 3 for 5. As a team, the Bobcats recorded six extra-base hits, including Gibson's first career home run.
The Bobcats had yet another strong first inning as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) led off the game with a single before he stole second base. Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, New Jersey) singled up the middle to score Palladino as the second batter of the game. Batten quickly advanced Donaghue to second base with a single before the Bobcats got both runners in scoring position via a wild pitch. Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) doubled down the left field line to score Batten and Donaghue to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) and Gibson recorded back-to-back RBI doubles as Oestreicher drove in Iannotti and Gibson drove in Oestreicher to make it 5-0.
In the top of the second inning, the Bobcats added two more runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead early. Donaghue singled to left with one out in the inning before advancing to second base on a single by Batten. The Bobcats pulled off a double steal to put both runners in scoring position, with Donaghue swiping third base and Batten taking second before Donaghue scored on a single by Guglietti, which put runners on the corners. Iannotti brought home Batten in the next at-bat with a RBI groundout to extend the lead.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Guglietti walked with two outs in the inning and scored on Iannotti's RBI triple to right field.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 9-0 as Gibson belted a solo home run over the left center field fence with one out in the top of the fifth inning.
Manhattan got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning on Chris Kalousdian's triple that scored Michael Pfenninger followed by a Joe McClennan's RBI single scoring Kalousdian.
Both teams' offenses took off in the eighth inning, combining for seven runs. The Bobcats took an 11-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top half of the eighth inning as Donaghue walked before Batten singled and both runners moved up a base on a throwing error. Guglietti stepped up into the box and brought home both runners with a two-RBI double to left centerfield.
The Jaspers scored seven runs in the final two innings but couldn't complete the comeback as the Bobcats held on to an 11-9 victory over the Jaspers.
Jankins pitched seven complete innings for the Bobcats allowing just a pair of runs on eight hits with three walks and struck out four batters.
Game Two
Quinnipiac shutout Manhattan 6-0 in game two of the doubleheader as Hamilton struck out a pair of batters in three innings of work before Luciani finished off the outing with four innings of relief to pick up his first career victory.
Guglietti went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, run scored and a RBI while Iannotti went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored and Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI.
Once again, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Palladino reached on an error to lead off the game before advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Donaghue. With two outs in the inning, Guglietti doubled to left field to score Palladino from second base.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Bobcats took a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs. Guglietti led off the inning with a single before going first to third on Iannotti's single. John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Guglietti and Iannotti advanced to second base. After Iannotti stole third base and Gibson walked to put runners on the corners, Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) pulled off a squeeze bunt to score Iannotti from third for a 3-0 lead.
The Bobcats doubled their lead in the top of the sixth inning to 6-0 with a three run inning. Iannotti singled with one out in the sixth before stealing second base with two outs. Gibson drove in Iannotti from third base with a RBI single. After Cruz was hit by a pitch, Saporito tripled to left centerfield to score Cruz and Gibson and extend Quinnipiac's lead. It's the third straight day in which Saporito recorded an extra-base hit to the opposite field to drive in at least two RBIs.
Hamilton and Luciani combined to allow just five base hits while striking out three Jaspers on the afternoon.
Quinnipiac will return to action with the final game of the weekend series against the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday with the first pitch schedule for 12 P.M. at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls.
