WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team put forth a valiant effort to erase an early deficit on Friday afternoon, but Siena College scored four runs in the ninth inning to claim an 8-3 victory at Fiondella Field on the University of Hartford campus. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 2-2 in MAAC play while the Saints improve to 1-0 against league opposition.
The middle of the Bobcat lineup stayed hot, collecting five of the team's seven hits in the game. Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) led the way going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.), Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.), Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.), Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and (Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) each had a hit. Gibson had an RBI and a run scored and Ruditys had an RBI as well.
Siena opened the scoring summary in the top of the third inning, plating four runs to take the early lead. The Saints loaded the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk, and followed with a two-run single off the bat of Dan Swain. After that, Siena moved the runners into scoring position and tacked on two more runs by way of a sacrifice fly and an error for a 4-0 lead.
Quinnipiac got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, manufacturing a pair of runs with some timely hitting. With John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Wash.) on first base and two outs in the inning, Ben Gibson launched an RBI double off the right field wall to score the Washington native. Brian Ruditys pushed the second run across with a single to center field to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
After a scoreless fifth, Quinnipiac scored its third run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Guglietti led off with a double, and was moved to third base on a ground ball to the right side by Iannotti. The next pitch went to the backstop and Guglietti alertly scored from third.
Zeros showed on the scoreboard for both teams in the seventh and the eighth, but Siena put the game out of reach with four runs in the ninth. Jordan Bishop plated a pair with a two-run single, and Justin Esquerra capped off the rally with a two-run homer to left field. Quinnipiac stranded a runner in the ninth.
Thomas Jankins took the loss, but pitched well for the Bobcats. He went 7.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out seven and walked just one. Gregory Egan (Seldon, N.Y.) and Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, N.J.) finished up the game, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks. They each struck out one.
The series concludes on Sunday, March 27 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Due to limited field availability in the area, the twinbill will be played at Siena Field in Albany. The second game will begin approximately one half hour after the conclusion of the first game.
