NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Sophomore Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.) belted his second and third career homeruns, including a grand slam in the first inning on Wednesday night, as the Quinnipiac baseball team downed Yale, 11-3, at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.
The win was Quinnipiac's second in its last three tries, third in the last five, improving to 5-14 on the season. Freshman Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Conn.) was credited with his first career win, tossing 3.1 innings of work through the middle part of the nine-inning affair.
Oestreicher went 2-for-5 in the game, totaling a career high five RBI and two runs scored. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) tallied three hits (3-5) and crossed the dish twice, while Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.), Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.), and Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) each had two hits in the game. Quinnipiac's 1-4 batters went 9-for-17 (.529) from the plate on the night.
Batten, Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) and John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Wash.) each drove in two runs for the Bobcats. Iannotti and Bodenhamer went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.
A dream start for head coach John Delaney and the Bobcats, Quinnipiac put a seven-spot up on the board in the top of the first inning. The big blow came off the bat of Oestreicher who belted a grand slam to score Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), Bodenhamer and Iannotti. Iannotti and Bodenhamer preceded the homerun with RBI singles. The first run came on a squeeze play that scored Palladino from third.
Quinnipiac got one more in the fourth when Batten doubled down the right field line to score Donaghue. Oestreicher launched his second homerun with a solo shot in the eighth, and Iannotti drew a walk with the bases loaded and Bodenhamer reached on an error to plate two runs in the ninth.
Charlie Murray (Charlton, Mass.) started on the mound for Quinnipiac, scattering five hits over four innings of work. He allowed one run, struck out five and walked two. Davis relieved him in the fifth, allowing one run on two hits over 3.1 innings. Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, N.J.) and Robert Hitt (Suffield, Conn.) closed out the eighth and the ninth.
Up next, the Bobcats and the Saints will now open a three-game set on Friday, March 27 with a single 9-inning game at Fiondella Field in West Hartford, Conn. at 4 p.m. The backend of the series is set for Sunday, March 29 with a doubleheader to be played at Siena Field in Loudonville, N.Y. The first game is set for 1 p.m. with the second game to start approximately 30 minutes after the first game.
