NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut – Despite leading for most of the game, the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse game couldn't close out the win as Central Connecticut State dispatched the Bobcats, 13-9, on Wednesday from Arute Field. The 2015 non-conference finale for Quinnipiac moves the Bobcats to 1-8 on the year while the Blue Devils improve to 3-6.
Facing their in-state rival and former conference foe for the 15th time, Quinnipiac was left searching for answers as the Bobcats held the lead for 50+ minutes but a string of five straight goals late from CCSU gave the Blue Devils an emphatic come-from-behind win. After dropping the first 13 games in the all-time series, CCSU has now won two straight games against Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac wasted a career game from Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) as the junior attack finished the day with a career-high six points. She scored three goals, good enough for her fourth career hat trick, to go along with a career-best three assists.
Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, New York) inched closer to history as she upped her career point total to 192 (138 goals, 54 assists) which stands just three behind Sarah Allen '13 (194) for first place on the all-time scoring list at Quinnipiac. Ochwat tallied three points (one goals, two assists) on the day and increased her multi-point scoring streak to 18 straight games.
Danielle La Rocca (Voorhees, New Jersey) also had herself a career day as the sophomore midfielder picked up the first two goals of her career. Having seen action in 14 career games before Wednesday, La Rocca's third career start certainly will be one to remember. Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) scored two goals to give her three straight multi-goal games. Devin Kelly (Miller Place, New York) added one goal to complete the Bobcat goal scoring on the afternoon.
Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) was sensational on the defensive end with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kayla Murphy (Garden City, New York) picked up four draw controls while Sara McCullough (Brewster, Massachusetts) was solid in the backfield with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Play was even in the early going as both defenses shined throughout the early stages. The first goal wasn't scored for 9:20 from the opening draw and just three combined goals were scored through the first 17+ minutes of play.
CCSU claimed the 2-1 lead at the midway mark of the first half but Quinnipiac answered with a resounding response as four straight Bobcat tallied put QU ahead 5-2. After Ochwat registered her only goal of the game to knot the score at 2-2, La Rocca's second marker of the day gave Quinnipiac a lead which they held deep into the second half.
The score at the half had QU ahead 5-3 and DeVito got things going with her first goal of the game to keep the Bobcats in front 6-4.
CCSU began their rally with two straight tallies before QU again answered behind the stick of DeVito. First DeVito fed Carey for the junior's 15th goal of the season and then DeVito finished a free position goal to give the Bobcats an 8-6 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining.
Trailing by two, CCSU had plenty of fight left in them as two Blue Devil goals were scored in a two-minute span to again tie the score. Quinnipiac's final goal came from DeVito with 12:20 remaining but the remainder of play was all Blue Devils as the home team scored the final five goals while holding QU scoreless.
Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, New York) tallied eight saves over 55:59 of action in goal for the Bobcats.
CCSU was led by a group of three players (Madison Hughes, Kylie Sullivan and Falynn McCartney) who all registered three goals and one assist each.
Nothing but MAAC games remain in the 2015 schedule for Quinnipiac as the Bobcats travel to Marist on Saturday for another road game starting at 1:00 PM.
