POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team knew a wintery storm was coming. Unfortunately for the road team, the blustery winds and steady flurries was the least concern for the Bobcats on Saturday.
Facing the defending MAAC regular season champions Marist, Quinnipiac was up against it on Saturday as the Bobcats fell, 13-3, from Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie.
Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, New York) played one of her best games of the season, posting 12 saves in goal against the consistent and steady Marist pressure. Her 20th career double-digit save outing came in a game that the Red Foxes outshot the Bobcats, 34-12, and dominated in time-of-possession. Tilts added a season-high three ground balls in her 60-minute effort.
Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) scored two unassisted goals while Briana Fountain (Marshfield, Massachusetts) added one more to account for the Quinnipiac scoring on the day. Babstock's two-goal day gives her 10 on the season while Fountain scored her third goal in the 2015 campaign.
A deep and talented Marist (6-3, 2-0 MAAC) roster gave the Bobcats (1-9, 0-2 MAAC) fits on both ends all afternoon as Quinnipiac mustered a season-low in shots (14).
Marist got going early as the Red Foxes scored the first five goals of the game. The Red Foxes started the scoring less than five minutes in and proceeded to hold the Bobcats scoreless for the first 20:17 of play.
Quinnipiac had some opportunities early as the Bobcats matched Marist shot-for-shot in the opening 10 minutes of play. Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, New York) had three shots-on-goal from prime scoring locations deep in the Marist defensive zone only to come up empty thanks to the excellent goalkeeping from Abigail Witczak who finished the day with seven saves on nine shots.
Babstock put an end to the scoreless streak for Quinnipiac with a beautiful move behind the cage as she deeked out two defenders, spun around in front of the net and then buried the goal in the upper left corner of the netting.
Marist finished the half with two more goals as the Red Foxes went into the halftime locker room leading, 7-1.
Not much changed in the second half as Marist continued their momentum to end the first stanza and added five more goals in the second to up their lead to 12-1 on the strength of a 7-0 run.
Babstock again put an end to the drought as she deposited her 10th goal of the season into the back of the net before Fountain closed out the QU scoring with just 48 seconds remaining.
Babstock, Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) and Audrey Samuelman (North Andover, Massachusetts) each tallied two ground balls. Ochwat led the way with five shots and Babstock led the Bobcats with three draw controls.
Quinnipiac finally makes a triumphant return home for the first time since March 6 as the Bobcats next have a game against Monmouth on Wednesday, April 1 at 3:00 PM. Wednesday's game against the Hawks will be the MAAC home opener for QU and also signals the end of a six-game road swing.
