
Palladino, Batten Record Two Hits Each in QU Baseball's 8-1 Loss to CCSU

New Britain, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team pounded out nine hits but could only get one run across the plate as the Bobcats fell 8-1 to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils Tuesday afternoon at Balf Savin Field.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 4-14 (2-1 MAAC) on the season while the Blue Devils improve to 6-6 (0-0 NEC) with the victory.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) and Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) each went 2 for 4 against the Blue Devils as Palladino tallied his team-leading seventh double of the season and Batten stole his team-leading ninth base.
Noah Hahn (Petaluma, California) scored the only run of the contest and Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) drove home Hahn for the only RBI. Hahn and Iannotti were part of the five player contingent that went 1 for 4 against CCSU.
Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, New Jersey) limited the Blue Devils early but he finished the day with 6.1 innings pitched and six runs allowed on nine hits. Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, New Jersey) and Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) each pitched for the Bobcats in relief of Scaglione in the final 1.2 innings.
The Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead, starting off with a RBI single by Matt Martinez that scored Dominic Severino. In the bottom of the third, Bryan Rivera scored on a wild pitch and Dean Lockery came home to score on Ian Glassman's RBI double.
Quinnipiac got a run back in the top of the sixth inning after Hahn single through the right side of the infield with one out. After Batten popped up to second base, Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) pulled a single to right field. With runners on first and second, Iannotti ripped a ground-rule double that scored Hahn and put runners on second and third. The Bobcats couldn't take advantage, as John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) struck out looking to end the inning.
CCSU extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom half of the inning after Corey Lerche led off with a triple and eventually came home to score on Martinez's sacrifice fly. The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead on an RBI single from Lockery that scored Jennings from second base after a single and a stolen base to lead off the inning. Later, Severino scored on a RBI double from Lerche.
The Bobcats got a few baserunners in the eighth inning but couldn't score as Palladino led off with an infield single. Hahn then reach on a fielder's choice, forcing out Palladino at second base. Batten slapped a single through the right side of the infield to put runners on second base but the Bobcats left runners on second and third.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Blue Devils scored two more runs as Martinez scored on Jennings' RBI then Jennings came home to score on Lockery's RBI double.
Lockery led the Blue Devil offense going 3 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and one run. Four Blue Devils recorded two hits, including Jennings who was 2 for 5 with a pair of runs and a pair of stolen bases, and Lerche who went 2 for 3 with a double, triple, run scored and RBI.
CCSU starting pitcher Cody Brown (2-0) took the win going seven innings allowing one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Bobcats return to action with the fifth game in four days when they face the Yale Bulldogs at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts on Wednesday, March 24 at 7 P.M.
