BUFFALO, New York – The 2015 MAAC season is underway for the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team, as the Bobcats traveled up to the four-time defending MAAC Champions Canisius on Saturday afternoon. Despite a goal and two assists from Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Quinnipiac suffered a 17-7 loss to the MAAC power in the conference-opener for both teams.
Quinnipiac (1-6, 0-1 MAAC) was led by its senior attack who extended her multi-point streak to 17 games dating back to the 2014 season. She added two draw controls and one ground ball to her three-point afternoon. Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) also had multi-point outings as each had two goals. Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) and Alexandra Hlesciak (Lumberton, New Jersey) wrapped up the scoring summary for the Bobcats.
With the score knotted at one apiece 10 minutes into the game, Canisius rallied off a string of eight straight goals to open up a 9-1 advantage towards the later stages of the opening half. Canisius would go on to hold the lead for the remainder of the game, but the Bobcats did show some fight for a 10-minute string from the first into the second stanza.
Ochwat started the Quinnipiac surge with 6:00 remaining in the half, as the senior attack put one past Canisius' Kayla Scully for her 20th goal of the season. With 35 seconds remaining in the half, Babstock got into the action with her seventh and eighth goal of the season over five minutes into second half.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Canisius strung together another run as the Golden Griffins picked up five straight goals to extend their lead up to 15-4. Quinnipiac answered towards the final minutes of the game with goals from Carey, Hlesciak (first of the season) and DeVito.
A clear edge in the stat sheet went to Canisius was the Golden Griffins outnumbered the Bobcats in draw controls (18-8) and shots (31-15) while also showing great efficiency in the transition game as Canisius went 10-for-11 in clear attempts while the Bobcats finished 9-for-15.
Quinnipiac split time between two goalies in the game. Kyle Larkin (Holbrook, New York) started and allowed nine goals while Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, New York) posted five saves on 13 attempts in just under 40 minutes of action.
Ochwat and Kayla Murphy (Garden City, New York) each picked up two draw controls while Briana Fountain (Marshfield, Massachusetts) picked up two caused turnovers. Murphy also led the Bobcats with two ground balls.
Quinnipiac is back in action at Central Connecticut State on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. The first draw is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Arute Field in New Britain, Connecticut.
