LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Quinnipiac University softball team dropped two games on Saturday in the Liberty Classic. The Bobcats fell to Kent State, 12-3 in the first game before losing 4-1 to Liberty on ESPN3. QU falls to 1-3 at the tournament and are 4-17 overall this season. Senior Nikki Barba led the Bobcat offense, going 3-for-5 on the day including a home run and a triple.
In the loss to Kent State, the Bobcats were shutout for the first three innings before stringing together three runs in the top half of the fourth inning. Sophomore Janel Hayes and junior Alyssa Frankenfield combined to hold Quinnipiac to just six hits. Hayes started the contest, pitching 3.1 innings while allowing three earned runs and five hits against 15 batters. Frankenfield came in to close out the game, pitching the last 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and two walks.
Senior Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) continued where she left off yesterday, going 1-for-1 at the plate with two walks and one run scored. On Friday, the senior hit three home runs against Saint Francis and finished the day with five hits and 8 RBI. Catcher Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) had the only extra base hit for the Bobcats, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Center fielder Brittney Cyr (Southington, Connecticut) led off the top of the fourth with a single to right, followed by a Lindsley walk. With runners on first and second, Edmands doubled to right center, bringing home Cyr and moving Lindsley to third. After a ground out, Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) recorded the second Quinnipiac RBI with a single up the middle. Edmands came around to score the third run off a sacrifice bunt from freshman Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York).
Sydney Robey and Herzog combined on the mound for the Bobcats, allowing 13 runs – nine unearned – off 13 hits which included four home runs.
Against Liberty, Barba led off the game by sending a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The home run marked the 15th of her career and second in as many days. The senior also took Saint Francis deep in the first game on Friday, with a solo shot to right field in the seventh inning.
The senior second baseman finished the game 2-for-2 on the offensive end when she added a triple in the fifth inning. Edmands, Magana and Herzog captured the last three Bobcat hits, all going 1-for-3 at the plate.
The Flames took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning thanks to four doubles off Lindsley, Quinnipiac's starting pitcher. Liberty led off the inning with a double through the right side of the infield that found its way to the fence. The runner advanced to third by tagging on a fly out to center field. Each of the next three hitters connected for back-to-back-to-back doubles to score the first three Liberty runs. With one out, Robey replaced Lindsley on the mound and struck out the first batter she faced. After a Liberty walk, Robey gave up an infield single and the fourth run came around to score on a throwing error to home.
After three no-hit innings, Lindsley finished the day facing 15 batters and allowing four earned runs off four hits. Robey closed out the final 2.2 innings holding the Flames to just one hit while striking out three.
Quinnipiac will wrap up the Liberty Classic on Sunday, March 21 against the North Carolina Central Eagles. The Bobcats will hit the field at 12 PM to cap off 22 consecutive away games. They will leave Virginia and begin a nine game home stand at the QU Softball Field in Hamden on Thursday, March 26 against UMass Lowell.
