LYNCHBURG, VA. – Senior Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) led Quinnipiac softball to a 1-1 start at the Liberty Classic on Friday. The Bobcats fell in the first game to Saint Francis, 13-7 but bounced back to take down Toledo, 5-3. Lindsley was 5-for-8 on the day with three home runs and eight RBI while pitching a complete game and recording the win against the Rockets. Senior Nikki Barba (San Diego, California) finished the day 2-for-5 with three walks and five runs scored.
In the first game, Lindsley's offensive power cut down a six run Saint Francis lead to one, but the Bobcats ultimately fell, 13-7 . Lindsley hit three home runs and batted in six runs in her first three at bats for Quinnipiac. She finished 3-for-4 on the game while Barba was 1-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored.
Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvannia) pitched 5.1 innings for the Bobcats, allowing 11 runs - five earned - and six walks against 35 batters faced.
The Red Flash jumped out to a six run lead in the top half of the first inning off of five hits, two walks and an error. Saint Francis started the game with a walk and five straight hits including two doubles before Quinnipiac was able to record an out. The Flash tacked on two more runs off an error to lead 6-0, with the Bobcats yet to bat.
Lindsley put QU on the board with a solo shot to left field but was the only Bobcat to reach base in the first inning. Saint Francis went up 7-1 in the second off back-to-back singles and were held hitless in the third. With one out in the bottom of the third, Barba walked and Lindsley connected on her second homerun of the day. She recorded her second and third RBI and brought the score to 7-3.
In the bottom of the fifth and still down by four, senior Brittney Cyr (Southington, Connecticut) singled up the middle and Barba reached first on a fielding error. Lindsley stepped up to the plate with her third at bat and two people on. She rounded the bases a third time with a three-run homer over the centerfield fence, cutting the deficit to one.
The Flash put up six more runs in the last two innings, scattering five hits off a combination of Robey and freshman Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York). Barba hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to bring the final score to 13-7.
In the second game against Toledo, Lindsley was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while shortstop Maria Ascher was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Senior catcher Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. Barba led the inning off with a walk and Lindsley's fourth hit of the day put runners on first and second for Quinnipiac. Edmands hit the second Bobcat single to load the bases and freshman Miranda Magana grounded out to the second baseman sending Barba across the plate.
The Bobcats scored their second run in the third inning and went up 3-0 through five innings. Ascher led off the third inning with a single to center and Lindsley reached first on a fielder's choice, but came around to score when Edmands doubled to right center. In the fifth inning, Ascher captured her second hit and gave Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead with a home run to right field.
After five scoreless innings, the Rockets finally got to Lindsley in the sixth inning. Toledo scored three runs to tie the game off two singles, a sacrifice fly and a double.
